Apple iPad 2 16GB Wi-Fi $519 at JB Hi-Fi (Price Beat Kogan)

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Picked up this bargain at JB, RRP $579, JB normal price is $553. Went in and prepared to accept $528 as a price match for Kogan ($499+$29), lo and behold they BEAT the price by $9. On top of this I paid with 5% off JB vouchers, so actual price paid was $493.05.

First JB refused, giving me the rubbish excuse that the Kogan price doesn't include GST until you enter your CC details. I called the bluff and put my details in while in the store, then came the stumbling from the store rep so I left. Went to the next store and bang, the above.

  • This is just bragging, not a bargain. You're not gonna be able to pricematch kogan except in the rare instances where you get a particularly desperate employee.

WTF? "You're not gonna be able to pricematch kogan" - Did you READ the post, I showed it's possible to do just that at JB. And then you neg for it? This whole site is about letting everyone know when you get a particularly good price for something, so others can potentially get the same deal.

      • To be fair, your story also makes it absolutely clear you might not get the price match and might have to go to another store.

      • Dont get so defensive, im not saying im ungrateful for your sharing, just that it isn't a bargain because its not an actual offered price. Im guessing the store was behind on sales targets which is why the salesperson made the incredibly RARE mistake of pricematching a grey import (which nearly no other store will do).

The wiki makes it absolutely clear - price matching is not a bargain.

Pricematching deals. Do not lead bargain with price matched price. Use the offered price, then you are welcome to remind people that you can get a price match. Price matching is a bonus.

    • true, but the way i see it, if OP posts his receipt you can try a pricematch based on the receipt, i say try because some shops won't even pricematch their other stores, but others will

      • See link, receipt attached. The extra bit about the discount cards is not for everyone, which is why I didn't feature that. Very few cases where bricks & mortar will chase Kogan prices.

    • this is not just a pricematch, JB have done a better price than Kogan, personally I think this is valid.

      • Which makes anything you can price match at Officeworks a bargain, since they'll beat it by 5% guaranteed.

I think the rule was introduced because of the 5% beat price match.

        • No the rule was introduced because the price matching occurs only when a deal is offered by a competitor. And another store then uses this as the basis to do a better deal, but it has many dependencies. So the fundamental bargain is the original deal.

By all means mention you PM'ed to get a better deal. This acts as a reminder to others to try a PM. But since it cannot always be guaranteed you will get a PM we dont allow a deal to lead with this

BUT in forums tell us all, even how you blinked your blond lashes at the sales person or whatever (as long as it works)

  • Worth sharing - YES YES YES

    In deal page - NOPE

    In Forums - YES

    Thanks

  • Ok deal but not that exciting.

EDIT: Just looked at receipt. This deal is rubbish. Only reason why they "price matched" Kogan is because you bought $51 worth of accessories. So the money they lost on the iPad (which is basically nothing) was made back on those gay accessories which could be had from eBay for $5.

The $519 was before I even mentioned the accessories. I got the "gay" accessories because it's a gift and will be used by a 4 and 5 y.o. THAT DAY, so needed to protect the screen and casing. Challenge anyone to get a better final price than $493.05 (without going O\S using exchange rates). Way to discourage people from sharing, thought someone might find it handy\useful to know what JB CAN do on an iPad…

      • People were getting them from Myer just prior to Xmas for $479. Challenge quashed.

  • I don't think many will price match. I tried when Apple had their one day sale and they wouldn't priceatch at $529. I don't see why they would pricematch Kogan.

Most PM policies don't apply to online only stores anyway.
