Looking for Advice on an Issue with a Mechanic

Seeking some advice on how to proceed with an issue I'm having with a tuning shop.

Back in January, my car had a cracked exhaust manifold. For a range of reasons and decisions it was replaced with an aftermarket one, and the resulting change in airflow meant that it needed to be tuned. I had the vehicle tuned at, let's call them Mechanic A, which was a tuning shop.

Cut to two weeks later I had warning lights for hill start assist and emissions control. On advice of a mechanic friend who no longer lives in my state, he recommended Mechanic B for ECU related problems. Mechanic B looked at the vehicle and after initial investigations found that they were not able to get into the ECU to look at the tune. I'm not an expert on these things but it was done through some means other than the OBD port - KESS or Alientech I think was mentioned by Mechanic A if that means anything to anyone reading this.

I called Mechanic A who was immediately quite hostile and repeatedly asked if I wasn't happy with the tune, claimed that the other shop probably didn't know what they were talking about, and that unless the issues popped up straight away then the problem wasn't the tune. They seemed VERY uninterested in even considering it might be their problem.

Following this, Mechanic B has attempted to rectify the issue in a few ways that ended with replacement of the O2 sensor given the errors that the car was getting. Having done this, I drove away and about 10 minutes later the issue popped up again. Cue return to Mechanic B.

Mechanic B removed the ECU and sent it to some kind of ECU decode expert people. Having done that, I have received the shocking news that despite the software on there which locked it, the car had in fact not been tuned at all. I believe now that having found that, Mechanic B is in a position to finally resolve the problem so I can get my car back. I'm still finding out but I believe I will be given some kind of report that highlights what was done or rather not done. The emissions control errors are exactly what we were looking to avoid by having the vehicle tuned so I think we've cracked it.

Now I'm stuck as to what to do. I have heard rumours (which are unsurprising based on my experience and the type of people in the shop) that Mechanic A are a shady bunch of dudes and possibly involved in dealing more than just car parts… I'm extremely nervous about the prospect of butting heads with them.

Bikies may not be an option given it seems I'm going up against a bunch of bikies in the first place.

I've put some options in the poll but I'm keen to hear some thoughts or ideas from the community.

  • Charge Back or Forget . Mechanic will not cooperate whatsoever

    • Gather all evidence in the meantime.
Don't fight these guys with fists, just hit them back the way they hit you: in the wallet.

…that is IF you manage to find out that they did wrong you

  • Is this something with an edc17 ecu or similar? If so, the reason they couldn't read the tune via obd is because they are read locked. You can only write via obd, unless the ecu is opened and read via BDM. It wasn't "locked" by the "tuner".

If you have the "tune" that they did, as well as an original file, and they are the same, you should at least tell them you want your money back. I don't think you'll have any luck with getting the rest paid for.

    • Not too sure - it's been a tough slog because I don't understand it at all lol. I agree that anything beyond the tune would be hard to get - the whole process has just cost so much damn money. The exhaust itself with dump pipe was $3000 from memory.

I'm trying to find out if the ECU shop has good evidence. If so then I think I'll try get the tune money back. Never done a credit card chargeback but perhaps that is a lower stress option.

From my little knowledge of Subarus, the ECU's are not factory locked, and can only be locked by a tuner. So quite odd that they would go to the trouble of flashing the car and locking it, and not just put the tune in, seeing as it would cost them nothing? Perhaps instead of flashing the modded file, they flashed the stock one back by accident.

  • What sorta car?

    • Subaru Forester XT

      • Damn, you probably could have got away with just using an O2 sensor extender and not tuned it at all. What year forester?

        • 2013 - the 2.0L CVT one. Tune was intended to be cautious as the drivetrain is fragile, so I'm told. The exhaust shop checked on the extender but they came back and recommended I get it tuned (totally different shop to Mechanic A and B)

  • replaced with an aftermarket one

didn't you find an original one from wreckers ?

  • lol… I’m not going to read all that.

    Anyone got a TL;DR?

OP had part replaced. Required a Tune Up.
      Completed through Mechanic.

Codes poped up after 2 weeks, decided to go to another mechanic to resolve.

2nd mechanic said 1st mechanic didnt do the work correctly if at all (Tune up)

      I think thats about right.

  • ECUTEK?

  • Hmmmm so your manifold cracked, replaced with a modded one (catless possibly?) necessitating a tune?

Chalk it up as experience, we've all been burnt one way or another when it comes to modding cars.

Oh by the way where's the 'go back to Mechanic A, ask the guy to remove the so-called tune and walk away' scenario? Also, how are you certain Mechanic B aren't taking you on a ride as well?

Don't think OP is into modding (CVT transmission after all). Was just repairing a cracked manifold.

In my opinion the OP has been reamed by mechanic A. Why not just replace with a genuine part from a wreckers and move on. No tunes required.

I wonder how bad was the crack…couldn't they just weld it up and call it a day?
