Stitch up or Just Bad Luck? (on Officeworks Price Beat)

Hello fellow OzBargainers!

Here is my story.

I seen Mac Mini M1 go on sale this morning at JB Hi-Fi, I decided to go to my local Officeworks and price beat. I approached the computer section and spoke to the gentleman about price beat and he said that was fine, he checked the price on the Officeworks website in front of me and it clearly read $1,079.00.

He then put the Mac Mini behind the counter for me to then pay for. I walked up to the counter roughly 5 minutes later and proceeded to pay, I also mentioned that I was price beating JB Hi-Fi.

I was then told she couldn't match it as the price has "just" updated and now showing $989.

Either I am the most unlucky person in the world or did I get stitched up, what are your thoughts?

    That post doesn't make sense.

      JB had it for $989.10
      He paid $989.
had Officeworks not updated their price he would have paid $939.65 (5% discount price beat guarantee)

        Ah. Now that makes sense…
Thanks for expanding on the query, stratbargain.

OP is a turtle. It cost him $50 for taking his sweet time walking to the counter.

    I agree with GG57.

    So… OP, you'd rather pay $1,079 than pay $989?

    • JB has it on sale for $989.10, so for Officeworks to drop it to a price 10 cents below that does sounds like a stitch-up…

  • +2

I mean I'd have brought it up with a manager to see if they'd sort it for you in good faith

I did, was told tough luck 🙁
      Top notch customer service

There was this item on eBay that can be bought for $19. But there was a $5 cashback promo running if I spend over $20. The next marked up price was $25. Am I unlucky or got stiched up?

      you just gave me cancer

      • Upvoted for your cancer. Good luck buddy!

          This guy…. oh wait

  • I would have made them honour it.

    • How? Bikies or ACA?

      • -1

I probably would have spoken to the manager in my male Karen voice and said that it was agreed to 5 minutes earlier.

        • +2

it was agreed to 5 minutes earlier^

          Pro tip.

          Enter OW.

          Go straight to cashier.

Tell them what you want to PB.

          Transact immediately.

@SF3: They need to retrain staff just to tell the person wanting the price match to go to the counter directly.

Rather than agreeing to something than losing out in that time.

            • @iNeed2Pee: Yeah, they should, but I guess it not in their interest as a for profit organisation. Lose less then lose more from PB.

              OP should know better :)

              • +2

                @SF3: 100%.

Note to self, go straight to the counter.

                • @iNeed2Pee: Some folks here, call up OW for a PB, so that would even be speedier it seems.

I would have said get nicked and returned to JB to honour the source of the discount.

    • +1

Or get JB to beat OW!

JB's price match policy is a joke:

        • +1

          True.
But I would've chosen to buy from JB as well. Otherwise, how are the staff and management going to change their attitude. Still, OP should've been faster than a turtle if they were keen.

    • +2

Definitely this!! No way I would have completed the purchase at OW - even if it meant driving/busing/hiking across town to JB HiFi. I am a principled bargain hunter!!

  • Someone else probably had just price-matched JB at Officeworks slightly earlier with that price and in that 5 minutes it took you to walk to the counter, OW just updated their price to beat JB by $0.10.

    So bad luck!

  • We know retailers are pushed to discount and would get out of their advertised obligations (Harvey Normans price match is an example) take it when you got it. Don't wait.

    • +1

      Harvey who??

  • +1

Thanks OP for taking one for the team on this.

  • +2

In these scenarios you are better off ringing up Officeworks directly to price beat then and there as they put the order through quick. It's always risky taking the time to go to the shop but they really should have honoured in this case, poor form.

  • +1

You had to get it quick, btw this is OzBargain, where speed matters!

    • +2

      Snooze you lose.

  • +1

Should have gone direct to JB Hifi

    • That’s not the OzB spirit!
