Which brand of ghee to buy?

Looking to make some biryani and the recipe calls for ghee. I've never cooked with or bought ghee before, can anyone recommend a decent brand?

I did see Britannia in Coles but after a Google search it seems to get mixed reviews.

Thanks in advance!

    Amul ?

    • Buffalo milk… No thanks…

      • Buffalo milk products such as curd, ghee are great.

Thanks, seems like Amul is the way to go, just gotta make sure it’s the yellow tin and not buffalo milk.

It can be made pretty easily from normal butter, though as with all things the investment:reward ratio might not match for you.

    • Some use butter some use ghee, no big deal.

    • Too lazy for that tbh as a first timer. Maybe in the future.

I've used many different brands. Personally, I can't tell the difference.

    • Same. I buy whatever is cheapest

    • Thanks, wasn’t sure if there was a big difference between brands.

  • I only have experience with no-ghee.

It's just clarified butter… melt the butter, keep the yellow bit not the milky bit. Ghee thanks.

Amul. Woolies stock it. Also most Indian grocers stock it.

  • Most Indian supermarkets will have it. Aussie supermarket chains will probably have it too, like Woolies or Coles, maybe even IGA.

    • Most Indian supermarkets will have it. Aussie supermarket chains will probably have it too.

What do you mean by 'Indian' supermarkets? Order online from India?
Pretty sure any supermarket here will stock these.

      • Indian grocery stores, there are plenty in big cities but only few have a wide variety of stock and reasonably priced.

Indian by birth here, Amul is good but only the yellow tin which is Cow milk ghee.
Personally I find Aashirvaad Svasti Ghee Is the best but very difficult to find.

    • Thanks! Was hoping OzBargains resident Indians would reply to be honest haha. Will go with Amul yellow tin.

      • Its @kanad's personal preference to use yellow tin ghee. We use white tin all the time and its perfectly fine.

        • I read the white tin is 50:50 cows milk and buffalo, does that make much of a difference?

Me and my girlfriend operate a commercial kitchen, we mostly make and sell Chinese deserts…
We had been using Mainland and Western Star butter for our products…
Until we experimented with Ghee and it definitely made our products more rich in taste and especially the flavour..

After trying all brands that we could possibly get our hands on here in Melbourne, we settled with ‘Maharaja choice Pure ghee’, best of the lot

We are now buying it directly from the supplier in Hallam and a 10l bucket costs us just over $100

Interesting. Thanks for the info, will have to try sometime.

  • As a total ghee fanatic there's so many on the market and it just depends what you're looking for and what you value in your purchase.

If you're using it for a curry - taste doesn't matter as much. But if you're putting it on a roti or cooking your eggs in it then taste is more important. If you're wanting it for taste - then only trying a number of the different brands is going to tell you what taste you like. Some are more caramelised than others (ie cocoearth vs milko/amul).

If you want organic, again, you're going to have to look outside of the supermarkets (thou I believe Woolworths have their own organic brand at a reasonable price point).
The other thing you want to consider is source. Australian butter, New Zealand Butter and Indian Butter are the most commmon here in Australia. You may want to be wary of Indian ghee that is very cheap. It has nothing to do with economies of scale but instead adulteration. Thankfully the Indian government is cracking down on adulterated ghee heavily, but at the moment, it's a huge problem with ghee being mixed with other oils. You can find a ton of youtube videos on how to tell if your ghee is adulterated or not - I suggest using them.

Lastly, if you're wanting to use ghee for it's health benefits like reducing inflammation, skin conditions, reducing cholesterol etc you're going to want the best ghee on the market. You probably wont be cooking your curries in it and it's going to cost you the same and last as long as a box of vitamins. For the best Australian ghee I recommend OMGhee (I think they're OMGheeAustralia on their socials. Anyway it's more expensive than the others but besides having the best flavour I've ever tried in a ghee, it's Australian and biodynamic. So super good on all fronts (except price). I guess you get what you pay for.
