Need Advice from Audiophile, Good speaker cabinets

Seeking advice from any audiophiles out there about upgrading my audio system…

Firstly is it better to upgrade my amp or my speakers (assuming i've got pretty shit both (35 year old sansui amp with no name speakers))?

I was thinking about just installing new speakers in my current cabinets, and was wondering if that's a good idea. Currently there is a 8' speaker, with a 2' tweeter.

Thanks for any advice….

Speakers have far more effect on sound quality than any modern amp.

The speakers (especially woofer) need to be matched to the enclosures. There is a lot of tech in this (and some black magic too).

You'd be better off just buying new complete speakers. I think that a nice Sub + Satellite setup is the go for aesthetics.

it's likely that your Sansui is putting out an acceptable (if not good) output, but if your speakers are rubbish, they wont be reproducing anything like what is being output.

If you are spending money on good speakers, don't overcrank the amp! You could potentially fry the coils.

    • Thanks for the advice, i was afraid of this.

speakers can only perform as good as the amp can provide.
if the amp is better then the speaker then the speakers will be maxed while the amp is not made to full use.
now you have an old old amp with no named speakers.. i would get speakers mate =)

  • I clicked Poll, but I think Speakers.

  • thing is a good amp from 35yrs ago isn't a whole lot better than today?

what has changed really? we're still largely on class a/ab transistors

do speakers first, and then the amp

    • I don't think it was a good amp 35 years ago, sansui isn't a budget brand, but they were known for their tuners.

The amp has its problems, like a high pitch noise if i turn the volume up too much.

But the speakers need to go.

    • Definitely good amps can last well. I have a B&O amp from the 70s that is hard to beat today. I remote control would be nice though…
