Buy a New iPad Air 4 or Samsung Galaxy Tab S7

I'm looking to buy a tablet. Mostly for readings (kindle, plays store books, pdfs, docx, xlsx, pptx…), web surfing, and occasionally for kids to play some educational games (Duck Duck Moose)

I know that both of them would be outstanding for those tasks. Personally I keen on an iPad, but I heard that Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 has a slightly better screen, does that mean reading experience will be better? I'm so in a dilemma now…

  • if they don't differ much i would be looking at what you have already in terms of phone and computer,,,

for us everything we own is charged by USB C makes it so easy to charge and travel no need to bring countless amounts of chargers and cables.

Laptop, 3 phones, 2 tablets, 2 powerbanks and camera can be charged with one type of cable

ohhh yeah… i forgot apple has changed their system again. well that makes it easy for everyone, except those that have docks, cables and chargers with lightning connection…

I think maybe you're thinking of the S7+, with the AMOLED screen? It's more expensive though. S7 and iPad Air for the most part have equally capable screens.

I own the Samsung Tab, but I would actually recommend the iPad for the average user, especially concerning what you'll be using it for. More optmised apps and general experience, cleaner interface, easier to use. Android tablets are quirky - you can do more on them, they're less restrictive, but it's no where near as intuitive or curated for.

I read some reviews online saying that the screen of S7 is more bright, double refresh rate (120Hz)

      • Oh, I stand corrected on those two things. Be aware that the 120hz eats some of the battery life though.

I personally like iPads for reading, because 4:3 is a much closer ratio to a book than 16:10 (you get too much empty spaces at the top and the bottom in vertical mode) .

    • Thanks, this is really something to consider. I did read some reports from other users that 4:3 is much better for readings, productivity… etc

  • Considered the S6 Lite? Or the S7 Lite is rumoured to be released next month.

Not sure why you were downvoted.

In the last month or two we've got a Tab S6 lite AND an iPad air 4th gen. The Samsung, including the S pen, cost about $380. The IPad air and Apple pencil cost almost 2.5x as much.

The ipad only has 64gb of storage, while I threw a cheap MicroSD card in the Samsung to boost its 64gb up over 300gb.

      Both screens are nice.

      • Yeah I dunno, his use cases are very low end which is what the cheaper tablets are for.

        • Yea I agree with you that a cheaper tablet will serve OP's needs fine, but for the sake of app quality and longevity (both processor speed and updates), OP'd be better off with the base model 8th Gen iPad (I went into more detail why below)

      • The Tab S6 Lite has a particularly slow Exynos processor, lifted off from a Galaxy A51. It's not particularly quick out of the box let alone after a few years, and most people keep their tablets for quite a while. Put simply it's not at all in the same league as the Air 4, with the A14 Bionic that outperforms even the Snapdragon 888 on the highest end Android devices out now. The S6 Lite can't even come close to the A12 which is a 2 gen old flagship processor in the base model iPad that costs a similar amount to the S6 Lite, and is a fairer comparison. You don't even need a Apple Pencil, I've had great success with a $50 one off eBay that largely feels the same, magnetically attaches to my Air and charges via USB-C.

The main issue with the S6 Lite is that it falls down on the main facets of a good tablet. Android tablet apps contain a lot of resized phone apps that aren't optimised to make good use of the display, a lot of good iPad apps simply aren't available for Android tablets given how they've largely died out from where they were a few years ago. But that is true regardless if you splurge on the Tab S7+. With the S6 Lite, the processor is weak which isn't good for longevity and will become a frustration over time and another longevity issue comes in the way of limited updates - iPads have a strong record on this and if you had an Air 2 from 2014, it will still be guaranteed to be completely up to date with the latest privacy, functional and security features until late 2022 minimum. That is 8 years, unmatched by any Android tablet. Ironically the Air 2 from 2014 and the base model 8th gen iPad both have a fingerprint scanner, which I'm surprised to see the S6 Lite lacks.

So its things like that give me confidence that even the base model iPad 8th Gen, will still be more functional and relevant in 4-5 years time compared to the S6 Lite, if you're looking for a basic tablet. The only real shortcomings of the base iPad, apart from aesthetics is the lack of a USB-C port and the small amount of storage, but again given these are basic tablets that people largely use to stream video/music to rather than store vasts amounts of data on, I'd put my money on the one with the better apps, 8 years of full OS updates and the significantly faster processor.

  • Both are great and mostly achieve the same tasks. If you're in the Apple ecosystem, go for the iPad. If you're not, the Samsung is a good pick too. Also, keep in mind the prices.

As an android user who has never owned an Apple product, I would get the iPad for your use. They have much better educational things in my experience.
