I'd go plasma over LED/LCD any day of the week.

For those interested in Panasonic plasmas, have a look at 2ndsworld.com.au for factory 2nds

    • This deal is available in stores. It was in the Big W in Woden ACT today and they had it marked at this price.

  • bing lee was selling the model above for $540 as well

    • That's almost the better deal!

      • +2

Comparing a Hitachi (which is a rebranded Tempo product), with a Panasonic is no contest!

        • I don't watch a lot of TV, at $100 less and $16 shipped instead of $40 it's a good deal to me.

        • Have waited 4 months for Tempo to fix a fault in my PVR! Don't answer emails. Don't ring back as promised & I was given 'priority' treatment according to them. I would never buy any Tempo rebadged gear again. Like others on Whirlpool Forums have said - there is no support from Tempo.

        • "One Company set to be scrutinised (by the ACCC) is Tempo Australia, whose web site lists several major International brands including Hitachi TV's" http://www.smarthouse.com.au/TVs_And_Large_Display/Industry/…

    • I doubt it is a 100Hertz TV, looked into product's manual, nothing about it being 100Hertz:

      http://www.tempoaustralia.com.au/hitachi/manuals/L42EC05AU%2…

      • yes if it were 100hz, would definately buy great for bedroom. otherwise nothing special.

      • -1

Plasma format doesn't need 100Hz like LCD which suffers from refresh issues, which is why they don't bother to mention this.

        • Pidim.. I'm talking about the Hitachi LCD TV.. and BTW the Panasonic Plasma one has a 600Hz Sub-field Drive according to Panasonic's website.

  • Also note too Awa 42" LCD for $398

How can you guys compare a (crappy) LCD with a Panasonic plasma, albeit the VT/GT/ST have better contrast ratios amongst other features that the UT/U/X range doesn't have, but still are using the G14 panel tech.

And the example of those LCD's being only 100Hz helps, but its all to do with Intelligent Frame Correction/Motion Flow which is a stupid tech anyway that you all should be turning off.

If you can't see that IFC/MF is making the picture appear to be in fast forward, then I recommend getting your eyes checked and buying the cheapest shit tv, as anything decent will be wasted on you.

    • I disagree with that comment about the motion flow as on my Sony EX720 it works quite well with minimal fast forwarding effect like the older motion flow engines of the first generation 100HZ TV's.

I cant say how this will be on cheaper LCD TV's but I prefer to have it on. My wife loves how smooth everything looks with it and insits to have it on all the time.

I do agree that Panasonic is better brand and should be better by miles than those other tvs mentioned.
Only thing I hate about plasmas is how you can burn in the image if you leave it paused for too long eg: the text in games or movies.

Not sure if newer plasmas have minimised this but my first plasma had alot of burn in of the text of my games. But for this price even Im tempted.

      • +3

Burn in is a thing of the past, no longer an issue.

    • And the example of those LCD's being only 100Hz helps, but its all to do with Intelligent Frame Correction/Motion Flow which is a stupid tech anyway that you all should be turning off.

      Damn skippy!!!

If you can't see that IFC/MF is making the picture appear to be in fast forward, then I recommend getting your eyes checked and buying the cheapest shit tv, as anything decent will be wasted on you.

I've wondered this myself, blind Freddy could see how awful MC makes the in-motion picture…I can't stand it & turn it straight off! I've got no idea why chumps hold 100+Hz up as 'the standard' for sports viewing with fast panning shots???

  • This is a brilliant buy for this plasma. You won't get a 42" LCD/LED near this quality of picture at this price point. If I needed another panel at home I'd grab it.

Those looking to see if this panel is 100Hz don't know much about plasma v lcd - don't let them put you off!

    Cheers!

  • How do you get the big warranty online?

I would like to get it because its super cheap.

  • -2

Im still waiting for TV price goes down ….

What's the lowest power consumption on the market ?

    • +4

a drawing of a tv on your wall uses no power apparently.

You could also grab an empty carton from outside someones house and just cut-out the fullsized image of the tv.

Both these options are heavily discounted at the moment.

      • ROFLMFAO…that is all! :)

  • +1

Great TV..Got it for 630$ from Goodguys 4 months ago…
Great picture quality and Good media playback including mkv(without DTS audio)…

  • If you want LCD and don't mind 2nds then 2nds World have 42' Panasonic Model No-THL42U30A $499.
    http://www.2ndsworld.com.au/product/panasonic-42-lcd-hd-tv-u…

    Panasonic 42' 3D $579.
    http://www.2ndsworld.com.au/product/panasonic-42-3d-plasma-f…

  • Amazing price! I have had the P42u20a for just over a year and paid twice that which I thought was a bargain at the time. I have been very happy with mine does reflect sunlight a lot but that's not the tv's fault.

  • +1

Not bargain. I bought the 3D model for $555 from Bing Lee 2 weeks ago.

    http://www.binglee.com.au/panasonic-th-p42ut30a-42-full-hd-3…

Online team sold it for $555 easily. it was their first offer. if I had pushed harder I could have got it even cheaper.

    • yeah they have been selling for $540 as well

  • +1

ahh i bought it yesterday with 2 years xtra warranty for $530. Tell me Bing gives you that for that price ..Awesome panel. shits on most lcds/leds for this price + it does 100Hz. BARGAIN

    • …+ it does 100Hz.

Does it just??? That's rather interesting for a PDP. :p

  • +1

I bought it yesterday too in store so no delivery cost, got the $30 extra 2 yr warranty also. Fantastic picture, love it.

  • too bad you cant use the android app for this model.

  • does JB stock this TV? Want to buy from them and use some stockland voucher. Or do they stock the UT30 which has added 3D?

  • Bought one in store today from Robina Gold Coast + the warranty. Really happy with it, can't go wrong for the money. I have the 50" version also that I purchased 3 years ago that hasn't missed a beat so this is a bargain by comparison.

I had to walk through David Jones from the car park and took a sticky beak in there on the way though…. they had this exact same model on the shelf for $949! I had to do a triple take. Tell him he's dreamin'

Plugged in a couple of 2TB NTFS HDDs and it seems to play about 95% of movies so far, trying to figure out why it doesn't like the ones it spat out

    • +2

The usual culprits of some MKV files not playing are things like the player not supporting header compression, or the player not supporting files with more than one audio stream. Both of these are relatively easy to fix by modifying the file.

      • Thanks noz I'll look into that. Found a few things listed in the manual about the same file types also. I'll do some converting.

Picked up a second TV today from Big W for the old man to replace his 48cm CRT. He was suitably stoked to watch Sharapova in HD.

  • -3

What idiot would buy a plasma tv?????

    • who wouldnt! plasma tv's are much better, great colour and very fast refresh rates. with all the rubbish 50hz lcds we have seen lately I would take this over them for sure.

    • +1

I have a Samsung Series 9 sitting right beside one of these $498 Panasonic plasmas at the moment, and I prefer the Panasonic for TV and movies. I must be ripe for institutionalisation. There's pros and cons either way, everybody knows them, but this debate is as old as Yoda.

  • -1

jambo I am calling the nut house for you.

Plasmas burnout, picture image degrades, they use a hell of alot more power, much heavier etc

    • +1

You're living in the past bro, that would have been relevant perhaps 5 years ago, not now!

    • mate you have got it alll wrong, none of those are a problem anymore. the U30 plasma is probably the best value 42" tv you can buy, of all of them.

  • Oh, well I didn't know that.
