    Fun fact. War and Peace was originally called "War, What is it Good For?" but Tolstoy's mistress insisted on changing the title…

    Seriously though, do people not know about the public domain? All these classic book posts lately and you can literally just go to project Gutenberg and get them free any day of the year. If anything that feels more ethical to me than people supporting publishing companies that are taking things out of the public domain and slapping a front cover on them and selling them. Looking at you Wordsworth Classics…

    Not sure if these Kindle books are "on sale" and have normal prices or are actually free forever, either way it feels wrong and people shouldn't waste their time adding them to their Kindle library a moment before they actually plan to sit down and read.

      They are on sale. If you go to their US links you see their usual price.
      I agree with you on principle but many books I downloaded from PG in their past had no formatting whatsoever - just walls of text making them very hard to read.
      Adding sensible formatting or other stuff often does add value in these cases.

        It's convenient to click a link on my mobile and have the book ready to go on my Kindle cloud whenever I feel like reading it.

      • There are plenty of public domain books available for free with nice formatting on sites like:
        https://standardebooks.org/ebooks
        And they actually have an editing team that proofreads them unlike many of the cheap Amazon versions.

          Still does not have the convenience factor of having all your books in one place on the cloud and getting them with one click onto your device when you want it. For me, downloading them specifically is fine but many, many people prefer and want the convenience which is fine, too as we are all different.

      @AngryAlfred

      What you say is true, Project Gutenberg is fine if you want plain vanilla text, unformatted, no index or references or revisions etc. Yes, they are in the Public Domain, but only for the original published text. For later revised editions, those editions may remain in copyright long after the original text's copyright has expired. A big difference. To refer you to a simple title remains contested, try George Orwell's "1984"or "Animal Farm" as examples where revised editions and the author's original drafts (as unpublished documents) remain private property of the author's estate. I won't enter into any argument here. Please are plenty of sources that can clearly explain what copyright actually is, besides keeping lawyers wealthy.

      For me, personally, I prefer formatted text. I have cataracts in both eyes and I can easily expand the text on my Kindle device to make reading comfortable. For me to be now able to go back and read the classics of literature is a gift, otherwise out-of-print and/or out-of-copyright titles may be lost forever. I am enjoying the renaissance of these potentially lost titles and I am sure many others are too. Anything that keeps books alive is a good thing i.m.o.
