Now, these are some true classics. I could not bring myself to just make a post with Jane Austen so I thought I throw in Dracula and Frankenstein as well. ;-)
All books are very highly rated and are free at the time of posting.

    • That's great, thanks.

      • Here’s another. Not aas many books but they have been formatted nicely and given decent covers. Most formats available.

  • Good on you Lysander.

Question to all writers and sages: my work involves technical writing, I have some interest and ability in creative writing, and am looking to read more widely in the hope I'll improve.

Anyone feel like weighing in on with opinions on how reading informed their writing, and how these books have "dated" in terms of more modern approaches to narrative.

Might not be the place to ask, but I might be pleasantly surprised.

    • I don't have much to say about it except that they're classics for a reason.

Is it the same reason Adidas three stripe snap pants are a classic?

        • Exactly.

          • @alcadive: I presume you mean middle eastern people took over what was mostly a Mediterranean cultural element leading to a relative golden age of art and science in Arabic speaking lands while Europe spiralled into the dark ages.

I was not aware that these classics were written so long ago.

Read a wide and diverse selection of books, both classics and modern as that will definitely help improve your writing (and your vocabulary).
Philosophy, ethics, fiction, fantasy all will help you improve your overall writing ability.
If you want to specialise in a genre focus on that one but do read around it.
For technical writing, I believe it is best to read plenty of other good (and that is probably where the difficulty lies) technical writing books. Ideally, those that have precise technical writing in "easy to understand" English which is probably nearly impossible.
      Just my five cents.

      • Exposure to diverse vocabulary will be a major benefit.

Lots of technical texts rely upon plain language rather than the legalese gatekeeping rubbish. Still have to know something about the field, but reading scientific literature is a pretty transferable skill, except for math heavy topics like in the natural sciences.

Maybe I should do more reading and less typing about reading.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must not pay full price on anything

    • I agree, and yet it's ironic as single men report fewer money problems for some reason.
