Multifunction Printer recommendations

I am after a printer for my home. I can spend up to 150$. Would like to have the following features on it:

  • Color printer/Scanner
  • Memory card/USB drive support
  • Auto Document Feeder (ADF) - to load pages automatically one by one
  • Duplex - to print 2 sided printing
  • Better running cost (for catridges)

And these optional features:

  • Fax
  • Wireless or wired LAN
  • LCD Screen to preview photos

I can see many printers from Lexmark, HP, Canon on this range, but confused about the features/running cost. I like a Lexmark one, X6575, about 225$ and they just closed off with 100$ cashback.

Any suggestions/experience?. Thanks.

  • Can't help you with MFP recommendations however in regards to running costs check the price of replacement cartridges/toner at http://www.cartridgeonline.com.au/ We have found them to be well organised and very good value.

  • I have found certain models of HP MFC + CISS from Rihac are very good value if you keeps long-term running cost in mind

    • let me check..ricoh, not heard on printers (i know abt their type writters)!, thanks

Edit: Oops..RIHAC looks like Oz brand !, good to know

      • it is HP MFC that has 02 cartridge that I was referring to if u want to know

my HP 3110 (2 yrs old) + $175 Rihac's CISS (inc post) has served me well. usually a full set of genuine cartridges sell for $75 and only last less then a year. since I replaced it with CISS a year ago now I have 90% of ink still available to use.

  • Brother MFC-9840CDW

Its was an expensive upfront purchase, but its got all you mention (And more) its a dream machine, cheap to run as toners (genuine or generic) will give much more rated life than HP's etc

Hunt around online you can find them for around $1200 inc GST, when I bought ours brother had a $200 cash back promotion so it worked out quite affordable for what it is.

Only downer is Brother sell the exact same model over in the US for about 1/2 the price, the joys of being Australian ;-(

    • In that case it might be worth looking at importing via www.priceusa.com.au Be sure to check however if there are any issues in terms of warranty, power bricks etc.

    • thanks jason101, i am looking suggestions like what you said on running cost. But more then 200$ means i need to wait long :-(

  • The biggest issue is that of running costs. Often replacement cartridges can cost more than the printer originally cost. Many printers now use chips to determine if the ink cartridge is genuine.

So the first thing is to visit ink suppliers to see what cartridges you can buy which are non genuine. the best way is to find if they sell refillable units as these are the cheapest. Not just ink to refill your genuine cartridges, as some manufacturers use materials inside the unit that can react to other inks that break down and clog your print head.

Its a game that often sees new printers come on the market, old models discontinued as the manufacturers see their cartridge protection systems circumvented. It's worse than software protection.

From that I would make the decision of which models to consider. And its probably worth more to you than the initial cost savings on any specific printer.

I bought a Canon MP760 4-5 years ago (no fax)

I buy 125Ml of an ink color for $25 ($100 for 4) with an initial outlay of $150 for refillable cartridges - they are refilled in the machine. The printer works like new, never had any head clogs and I always print in full color. The ink needed replacement a year ago. I shudder to think what I would have spent on cartridges that hold 5ml each ( 125ml = 20 plus cartridges of RRP $30 each so you do the math)

This may mean you buy a model thats been on the market for 6 or so months but its well worth it. The systems are different from my unit, but I think you'll get the idea.

    • The refillable catridge concept would be the perfect solution, thanks. Will check on that front. I think monkp post also similar line.
