Are Digitech Multimeters Decent Enough?

Hey all,
looking at getting a multimeter, are the Digitech ones from JayCar decent enough home tinkerer & automotive use?

Would mostly be used on 1-24v sources, but would be good to handle 240v+ if ever needed in future.

Thinking of either these:

  • My preference would be the cheaper one as it has better specifications.

    • The tighter accuracy on that was one of it's selling points for me… But missing a couple nice to haves such as temperature & the non-contact AC voltage.

There's a $49 one which keeps the accuracy, has temp… But no looks like backlight which is a shame and isn't true RMS (which honestly probably won't matter for me since it'd be mostly DC usage anyway).

    Yes. For simple automotive stuff.

If you are messing with 240v, you really need a license or some training before you go messing with that.

    • Yeh the 240v was mostly a 'nice to have' just in case… Honestly don't see me ever using it on mains unless was just the non contact voltage test.

  • Yeah good enough. I've used their cheapo $10 ones sometimes. They last a couple of years before breaking.

YES, but wear gloves when using it for 240V and make sure the power is turned off before you plug the multimeter into the live voltage.

But if it's off how do you measure it?

  • Yes, I use the 10 dollar basic one (DT830b clone) and another 20 dollar one and it's fine.

  • Your first one has non-contact AC voltage testing. Basically, you hold it up to a cable/powerpoint and it'll flash & beep to show if there's a voltage, and is super handy when say testing what powerpoints are linked to what breaker. Got a couple of these at work if I leave my toolbox at home.

Similar equivalents are Uni-T brand ones, as you can get DC clamp meter variants that let you check the current draw on a wire without disconnecting or stripping insulation, while working on your car - Model UT202A for $45 is fantastic.
