Splitting Cartons of Beer with Friends

Hi all,

I love beer, variety, and saving money. Recently I started buying a lot of cartons online through various deals and loopholes and splitting them between myself and 7 other friends. A group of 8 works really well because 8 is the highest common factor of 24 and 16 meaning that everyone gets either 3 or 2 of each beer depending on the carton size. My target cost is always $80 as this is what I am willing to pay for a mixed carton. An example of the latest group order is below:

3 x Mismatch DDH Hazy Session
3 x Bad Shepherd Homegrown Session IPA
3 x Garage Project Golden Path Hazy IPA
3 x Moon Dog Mack Daddy Dark Ale
3 x Fox Hat Red Pelt Red IPA
3 x Fox Hat Full Mongrel Imperial Stout
2 x Otherside Red Ale
2 x Pirate Life Stout
2 x Pirate Life Point Nine

Heading into winter the focus will be on dark ales, porters, stouts and red ales.

The benefit for me has been the ability to try a variety of beer for cheaper cost and a greater appreciation of the product as I have restricted my drinking to Friday and Saturday nights only. Feedback from friends has been similar and they have requested some specific beers that I will try to add to the next order if the price is right.

Splitting the cost with a few mates is one thing, what your talking about is going down the Liquor licence road.

Thanks for the advice, I'll leave my post here in the hope it inspires people to do the same with their friends!

Plotting cartons with your mates needs a liquor licence? Come on mate.

  • Make your own beer. Cheap and very easy to do.

omg, all IPA and craft beers have the most wanky names.

I am so sick of the IPA trend. Like a beer can't be good unless it has citrus/floral hops and IBU of 3 million. I make a point of not drinking IPAs most of the time.

      • Cool. You know it’s entirely subjective and you don’t need to drink them right? They are also popular for a reason, and it’s not trend.

Yes that's what I said. You understand correctly. Well done.

Mates of mine like to make different brews, lots of recipes on the internet to knock out a few kegs.

    Wish i was your friend.

    • Why? He's not giving away the beer for free! 😋

  • Do you think, looking at your wall of beer, that they may literally be presenting themselves as a barrier toward more constructive pursuits?

    • It has actually made me more productive - I appreciate the beer more and have limited my drinking to Friday and Saturday only, if at all. I am also conscious of being an enabler to my friends so I have included a couple of non-alcoholic beers in the mix.

    • You don't have to drink to get drunk.

      • How else do you get drunk? ;)
