Need Some Advice on RAM and SSD for Gaming PC

Hey everyone,

Need some help picking between a few RAM and SSD options for my build.

Case: Lian Li LANCOOL ii Mesh
CPU: i5-11600K
MOBO: Gigabyte Z590 UD AC
PSU: Corsair RM750X

My options for SSDs:
1. Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB ($109)
2. Crucial P1 1TB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD ($129)

Obviously the P1 is double the capacity of the Samsung. But is there a large speed difference between the two? I can potentially save money and buy a second 970 EVO + at a later date.

My options for RAM:
1. Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 16GB (2x8) Desktop Memory Black CMK16GX4M2E3200C16 ($139)
2. Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3600MHz C18 Desktop RAM - Black CMK16GX4M2D3600C18 ($139)
3. Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB (8GBx2) 3200MHz DDR4 Desktop RAM - Black ($125)
4. Patriot Viper 4 Blackout Series DDR4 16GB (2 x 8GB) 4400MHz Kit C18 ($129)
5. Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) 4400MHz PC4-35200 Dual Memory Kit - PVS416G440C9K C19 ($135)

I'm happy for anyone to suggest any other components

  • Get the Crucial NVMe drive all day every day, there is 0 reason to buy a new SATA SSD unless you need more than 2TB of storage.

For RAM, get the Viper Steel, you can't really beat Patriot for quality and affordability.

    • Hi, thanks for the advice. I made a mistake with the Samsung. It's the 970 not the 870

      • -1

        Kingston A2000 1TB

      • It depends, what are you using the PC for?

        • Purely gaming.

          • @Pornboy69er: For pure gaming, you will notice no differences at all, so get the A2000, P1 or SN550.

Two factors for this, the first is that the more empty space an SSD has to write, the faster it is to write. Not an issue with regular drive usage, but gaming is constantly writing tiny chunks to the SSD, so having more space reduces micro stutters. The second is that you can obviously have more games installed at once, nothing kills the mood more than having to wait to redownload a game.

You wouldn't notice a difference between a SATA SSD and NVMe drive while gaming, let alone a slightly faster NVMe drive. The only applications where the 970 EVO Plus would be valuable are machine learning, big data modelling, photo editing, video editing and rendering as a scratch disk.

Spend the extra money on a better GPU or on 32GB of RAM.

  • Storage wise, really depends on what you're doing with the PC. Sometimes you would prefer speed over storage capacity. If for gaming, I'd opt for the 970.

    RAM latency in order:
    1. 10 ns
    2. 10 ns
    3. N/A
    4. 8.18 ns
    5. 8.636 ns

I believe RAM branding doesn't really matter, the only difference is speed which I calculated above which also doesn't really matter as much, especially for an intel based pc. I believe the consensus is go for whichever is cheaper/on sale/aesthetics (RGB). Also more sticks the better.

    • Hi, I'll be using the PC for gaming.

I've looked at reviews for the RAM and apparently the Patriot Viper 4 Blackout Series doesn't reach advertised speeds. Theres a lot of negative reviews on Amazon.
