Wireless Security Alarm System Vs Wired Security Alarm System

Looking to setup alarm system in my house and looking at both wired and wireless options. I am leaning towards wireless to save on costs from having to hire an electrician to do the installation assuming wireless will be DIY.

Is there much difference in performance and reliability with using wireless alarm system over a wired one or drawbacks ?

If wireless is also a good option, can anyone please also recommend good product ? If it can be integrated with a google home, that would be a plus.

IMHO traditional security systems are not worth the hassle and cost. I'd suggest a cheap wireless system to monitor from corridor and back entry/ living is enough.
I've done my Bosch system myself, I've got 3 false alarms in 2 years. My neighbour got it installed it professionally and he gets false alarms much more often. Nowadays most neighbours ignore the alarm due to this.
So, I'd suggest cheap wireless system to alert you and 1-2 wiress ptz cameras inside at critical points E.g inside garage and usual set of cameras outside would do.
If I could redo, I'll just use IKEA motion sensor with smartthings. I may throw in a buzzer too.

I agree, but the only drawback of not having a proper alarm system is not getting the discount in home insurance. That is also one of the reasons why I am after setting up the alarm system.

      • Go through the prompts - you will be surprised - when I did it the difference was only like $10 or something for the year. I've got one installed, but I selected no on insurance incase I leave home one day and it wasn't turned on…

  • Wireless can be decent these days, wired is pretty much always better reliability wise, but depends on how long you're planning to own that home. Also how much effort you want to put into each etc.

  • If you have the right network infrastructure in place and a reliable wifi network setup, Wireless can be good and reliable. But, you are often locked to the brand and have to "stream" via their online service and there is the risk of other eyes watching. With wireless, you often need a battery so that can be annoying. And you cannot always have a "stream" on. So if you wanted to have a computer sit there with a LIVE stream, sometimes it cannot be done. The ring door bell is a good example.

With a wired unit, you have a NVR which you can lock down so you can avoid other eyes watching. Plus, it is a bit more reliable. I have two wired units and they are fantastic. I have them on a TV in my office steaming a LIVE view all the time and they are fantastic. I've locked it down so no external access can be made and it is amazing to see what is blocked. One of the units gets China wanting to access it a lot for example.

    Just my two cents.

    • I think you are talking regarding security cameras, which I have. My query is more in regards to alarm system specifically.

      • My apologies.

I would go for an alarm system that could hook into your security system. I would suggest wired with a battery backup. I would assume most run on 12v, so you wouldn't need an electrician.

        • Wouldn't wired need an electrician for install?

          • @DevD: Being 12v, I wouldn't have thought so. If you have some basic knowledge and have an easy place to run cables then you should be fine.
