Any Recommendations for Heat Pump Dryer & Washer?

Hi all;

With winter coming our clotheshorses in our 2x2 townhouse are not cutting it.

So we're looking at a dryer, and to replace our washer which was >10 years old when it was received as a hand-me-down.

The space has a ventilation fan, but I'd much prefer a condensing or heat pump dryer to cut down on humidity. Considering power usage, I think a heat pump is the way to go.

We have space for a separate washer + dryer (stacked on top of each other) and I've heard bad things about combo units so thinking of going for a matching unit.

In short, looking for:

-A washing machine + dryer that matches with readily available stacking kit
-Heat pump dryer, preferably with option to drain to sink
-Reasonable energy rating (7 stars+ seems to be the norm for heat pump units)

Budget, obviously the lower the better, but I'm not looking for some $400 Beko job that turns the laundry into a sauna. I figure $2k - $3k for a washer and dryer is realistic.

Edit: Any suggestions welcome, I've been looking at the lg 9kg dryer/10 kg washer. Pair is $3200 with a $300 gift card at harvey norman so guessing JB Hifi will probably be able to do them around $2700-2800ish. Not sure how much margin there is on products like this. Also looked at the bosch combo packs which have been popular previously but they largely seem to be discontinued and getting cleared out

Would recommend the german made bosch range. I have both the washer and dryer. I know people with the Miele combo, also works well.

Main benefit of the Bosch is having iDos - you don't have to add detergent to the wash every time, you load up 1.5L of wash and about half a litre of softened and away you go.

    It's very quiet also.

We have the budget series Bosch models (4 series for washer, 6 series for heat pump dryer). Not German made and no iDos, but would still recommend them both

      • The Bosch stuff seems to have pretty reliable reviews (unsurprisingly)…

LG stuff looks swish but has some more hit and miss reviews.

Cheers. I think I'll go down to Good Guys in my lunch break and see what they can offer

  • I have the FP 10kg washer and 8kg heat pump.
    I"m happy with them.

  • I am doing some research on the dryers.

    • Bosch dryers are made in china, washing machines in germany.
    • F & P DH8060 has a good reputation (heat pump) and is about $1307 cheapest online
    • LG is cheapest to run and highest ranked on choice = dvh08w
    • most are 2 year warranty

    • If you are going for vented, need to open a window and close door of laundry as humidity rises, but can vent outside

    • heat pump dryers - seem to not dry sheets correctly and cause them to ball, some people complain they don't dry that well, and take longer
    • vented are about $1/load, HP = 25 to 50c per load
    • a straw poll at my work - everyone has a vented dryer
    • Main turn-off for vented dryers is opening a window is not an option, and opening the door to the laundry + unlocks the house. Plus the dog usually sleeps in the laundry, so I don't want to make it extremely humid in there.

I could put it out in the garage, but I don't really have space and would have to do a pretty major overhaul to make it fit

If you have a reverse cycle air conditioner turning it on 1 or 2 hours a day would help dry clothes. I wash once every 2 days and everything dries.

    • Hmm this could be a reasonable interim solution, cheers!

I would spend money on a good washing machine such as a German made Bosch, but as we don't use it much, I'd skimp on the dryer and would get a cheap Beko 7kg heat pump with a 5 year warranty.

Pity the current models aren't under $800 anymore.

Personally, I skimped and got a condensor dryer… heats up quickly and doesn't feel damp at the end of the cycle unlike some heat pump dryers. If we use it once a week, it would cost say 3kw or $0.66 per load. If we got a heat pump, it may be say 1kw or $0.22 per load. Over a year, it's a saving of $23, not significant enough for me to spend an extra $700 on a heat pump.

If we did a load every day, then that's a different story.

    Wife prefers to dry outside.

    • We've got the cheap Beko heat pump dryer and have been happy with it. Does a good job drying the clothes but it does ball up sheets. That said, with 5 years warranty, it was a no brainer at that price.

      • I paid $500 for my condenser dryer.. but would I would have purchased the Beko if I didn't already have one.

5 year warranty is icing on the cake.

I can see Beko increasing market in the middle range appliance market, the same way Hyundai to cars 20 years ago.

It gives buyers confidence to try a new brand.

    • I was going to go for the Beko heat pump dryer but after investigating Beko on productreview decided against going for anything Beko - though I think their dryers are probably ok - just if anything goes wrong, forget customer service.

  • I got this dryer: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/611181#comment
Working as it should so far. No issues.

    • $500 is ripper cheap for anything with a heat pump. Shame it seems these are more like $750-800 now

  • Hey mate - which dryer did you end up getting and which store in Perth? I'm on the lookout for one right now…

    • I ended up going for a conventional/vented fisher paykel DE7060 G2 dryer and WH8060 washer.

Just wanted a simple solution that would dry quickly and be bulletproof.

The heat pump dryers still appear to be hit and miss, but if I was going for one I think Bosch would have been my pick

      • Ahhh i'm still researching the heat pump dryers and its a maze out there :(

Prob agree on the Bosch dryer, saw this but no one's left much feedback after delivery so hard to say:
