Qantas Classic Rewards flight - Qantas any better over Jetstar?

Heading to NZ with kids using Classic Rewards. Two legs there (Perth to Melb on Qantas then Melb to CHC on Jetstar). Two questions:

1- I see the Jetstar trip has a reduced baggage allowance and no seat allocation. No big deal but it has made me wonder if I should pick an all Qantas set of flights instead. I remember I would never travel on Jetstar last time I went to NZ but that was 10 years ago.

I have the option to use Qantas for the last leg instead of Jetstar but it is an hour longer overall flight and I get in at midnight instead of 8PM.

Anyone had Jetstar and Qantas flights? Any issues?

2- They state I will get all points refunded if I cancel. I'm guessing this applies with the Jetstar leg too (as it is made using Classic Rewards) and not some type of Jetstar credit. Is this true anyone know?

I wouldn't go with Jetstar if I had the option of Qantas. With the additional baggage, seat selection and meal I would still prefer it even if I arrived 4 hours later.

    • Depending on the age and temperament of the kids a midnight arrival might be more of a pita than 3 hours sitting in an unknown seat.

  • Are both legs Jetstar? If not then you'll probably need to get your bags and take them to the international terminal (same building) in Melbourne.

      No. I wondered about this.

In the end there were too many questions so I just went the all Qantas route.

Leave at 10am instead of 7am. Arrive at midnight but that's 8pm our time. Not too bad.

10 hours with a stopover is not all that bad especially since you are making use of your rewards points, which is a huge saving over flying direct with AirNZ.
        Enjoy the trip.
