Honda CRV 2011 Model Emits a Lot of Exhaust Gas

I need help guys!

Last night I found my car emits a lot of exhaust gas and exhaust gas sound like turbo engine. Initially I thought must be the cold weather but after I drove for an hour, my car still emits ton of exhaust gas. Same thing happen today, I really worry something wrong with my car engine. should I really start worrying it?

Update 04 Jun 2021:

I done my car service on 01 June 2021. Mechanic cant find anything wrong with my Honda CRV engine.

Today I walked in again to mechanic because my car is shaking and vibrate after service.

Mechanic told me nothing wrong with my car but he would like to change "Differential Fluid" for my car. The reason for it is because my car is a bit shaking while turning in low speed. I can felt it shaking while turning and on reverse too! He mention front and real but from my understanding Honda crv only do real differential fluid. He really confused me now. He going to change me $280 for.

Is the mechanic right for my car problem? Do we need to change "Differential Fluid"? As I can see Honda change it on 20K and nothing needed after that!

How much the cost to do it?

Many many thanks!

By gas, do you mean "smoke"??

    If so, what colour?

    White is a fueling/ignition issue
Blue is an oil burning issue
Whispy/quickly disipated white is a cooling system issue
    Black is a fueling issue

And how much/how thick is the "gas"? 1 being I can kinda see it, 10 being it's so think I cant even see the cars behind me…

Or, by gas, so you mean "gas"??

What does it smell like? Rotten eggs?, Farts? Chemical? Petrol? Sulphur?

      • Smoke
        -White colour
-How thick is the "gas"? "3"
-What does it smell like? " Sulphur"

      Thank you.

      • If it is white, does it dissipate quickly like steam, or just linger around like wood smoke?

@aiyoyo: That just looks like normal cold weather cold engine start. But then you said it's still billowing white smoke after an hour of driving? Are you sure? Any other weird noises or driving characteristics?

Just take it to a local mechanic in the morning for a look over.

@Hybroid: Pretty much what I thought. Just looks like startup condensation in that video.

            • @Hybroid: I have to book for another service for this,no choice! Thank you!

              • @aiyoyo: You don't have to book a service. Take it to a local mechanic garage to look at it and confirm if there's an issue. You may have to pay 0.5 or 1 hour labour. Better than an undue service (unless you're due to service it soon anyway).

        Looks like steam to me..

If it does this after the car is nice an warm I'd suspect water getting into the cylinders (head gasket or cracked/warped head).

        Just a guess though.

Do you mean it emits smoke? If so what colour is it? It can usually tell you whats wrong:

White = burning coolant (head gasket failure)
Blue = burning engine oil (worn pistons, cylinders etc.)
Black = too much fuel in air-fuel mixture

    • Yes, i mean it emits white colour gas. What can I do now?

      Thank you,

It could just be the white gas we all see in a cold morning from all the cars on the road…

        • I hope no problem for it. I can't afford anything right now. Thank you.

@aiyoyo: Your car is 10 years old and has a serious emissions problem. It should not be driven at all until fixed because doing so will destroy the (expensive) catalytic converter, and even cause worse trouble.

Choices may or may not include fixing it DIY, paying to get it fixed, selling it to someone who can afford to fix it at an appropriately reduced amount to cover them for the risk involved (not just cost and effort).

If you smell sulfur ('rotten egg gas'; hydrogen sulphide), you have a fueling problem. this is a symptom of a major fault which may itself be cheap, or expensive to resolve. In addition, ten years of use, and now a short period producing high levels of additional fuel and/or coolant may already have destroyed the catalyst in the catalytic converter.

I'd be expecting a massive vacuum leak and/or major sensor failure

Read OBDII port for errors- it provides clues that will help you verify the cause
            MAF/MAP sensor
            O2 sensor
            Temperature sensor
Check coil packs and spark plugs (change plugs if not changed for a long time)
            Engine Seals and gaskets
Head Gasket failure allowing coolant into a cylinder (check coolant level is not affected). If so the catalytic converter will need to be replaced.

    Blown head gasket

    • Blown head gasket?

      • +2

Like a big 'washer' between the engine block and the cylinder head. Leads to lots of oil running back down into the combustion chambers, oil leaking around the outside of your hot engine, etc.

As others have asked, what does it smell like?

        • I cant see engine oil stain outside engine. Also, no engine over heat indicate so far. Smell like "Sulphur"?maybe

          • +2

@aiyoyo: Is the smoke dark or light? If light, smelling like sulphur, probably a busted oxygen sensor. Regardless of the answer, just book it in with your mechanic and have it dealt with, lah.

            • +3

@M8y: Busted O2 sensor would throw a check engine light.

Sulphur or rotten egg smell would be partial unburnt fuel burning in the cat or a failed/failing cat.

Blown head gasket would cause blue smoke/steam and/or overheating, oil in coolant and/or coolant in oil.

But I agree on the “just get it booked in” part.

It’s hard to tell from the video, does the smoke/steam linger around?

It looks to me like it’s normal steam/condensation you get when it’s cold.

    • Ok. Thank you.

      • +2

Check it again when it’s warmer. Ie lunchtime. Assuming it’s over about 15 degrees, it might not show anything if it is just start up condensation.

        • Ok. Thank you.

    Incorrect air pollen filter installation.

    Did you do it yourself?

    • +2

What’s your take? Upside down or back to front? Combination of both, perhaps?

      • +5

        Inversely perpendicular for sure.

      • I don't get it!

    • Yes I did it many months ago. Related?

  • Sure it’s not coming from the driver? Lol

On a serious note, don’t fuk with exhaust gases. Get it diagnosed by a mechanic, by all means fix yourself but get a professional to work out what’s wrong.

  • Unless its blowing FUMES of SMOKE its nothing to worry about.
What you see is normal for this time of year

  • +1

Given that you don't even know the terms - "GAS" I presume you have no idea in how to maintain the 10 year old vehicle.
Has it got water? Oil? When was the last time you changed the spark plugs or cleaned the air filter?

Come back to us with proper terminology. Find out if it really is GAS, or condensation.

    • Sure

sulphur smell? did you put in diesel instead of petrol?

    • 100% sure petrol

  • Help?

    • +1

While you’ve edited your OP tacking ‘help’ on the end isn’t going to get the best responses. Anyone who has already read the OP probably won’t get the edit and just assume nothing hasn’t happened about the original problem.

At this point you need to either trust the mechanic and get the recommended repairs done or get a second opinion.

      • Ic.Thank you for your opinion.

Could be anything really, my guess is catalytic converter.

Might need to find a better mechanic though.

    • Thank you
