Airbnb Internet Problem - Help Required Pls

Hi - looking for some help.

Just checked into an air bnb and tried to use the router plug to charge another device. It didn't work so plugged router back in and now the router is only displaying one network where prior it had the network name 2.4 and 5g and the ability to enter a password to obtain internet access.

It is now just the network name and is a public network and there is no way to connect via a password. Have tried power cycling the router but the network still doesn't go to a secure one.

I don't have an ethernet cable to connect to the router unit to troubleshoot but I suspect I need to active these networks again? Could I plug the ethernet cable from the wall to my computer or does it have to go via the router to access router settings?

Any feedback or solutions? Air bnb guy said he cycled the offsite modem but the router was still on. Thanks in advance

  • just use the dam ethernet cable if you have one then create hotspot wifi using your laptop.
Ethernet should work without need of entering any password. (its not a bloody US intelligence department)

Maybe they didn't save the configuration into nvram so the power cycle has put it back to default settings…

Could always go to an officeworks and buy an ethernet cable

    • Yes, seems to be the smartest move. Just a hassle. Cable runs from top of fridge and would need to go to otherside of apartment. Hotspot will be the go.

    • could be, I once found a Cisco router in prodution which was set to NVRAM clear register, lol

And this is why we install routers under key locked cabinets in AirBnb and hide access points in ceilings :-D

    • And I certainly hope they have secured the router with a different password!

Never happened to me before. You should be able to solve my query with a username like that. Why can't I get an IP address? Why did it default to a public network on cycle?

Is the SSID still the same name or did it default back to the standard router SSID?

I would too after reading the responses from OP.
The sheer arrogance displayed for not doing anything wrong is mind-blowing.

I'd be charging the OP for someone to come out and fix it.

I admitted fault. Where has any arrogance been displayed? As mentioned, turning a router on and off shouldn't bring down the guest network. Let me guess? Run an Air bnb?

As mentioned, turning a router on and off shouldn't bring down the guest network.

          It shouldnt, but it did.

You also didnt just "turn it off", you used their power cable to try and charge your device.

At work we have battery charging systems with DC jacks. On face value, these look exactly the same as a standard 12v DC power supply, but they automatically cut off when the battery is charged. As a result, using a non standard 12v power supply in our system breaks the equiptment.

Nope, but I'm also not an inconsiderate person.

Your response is pure arrogance, not just to me, but other posters too. You continue to deflect blame and think there's nothing wrong with still meddling.

You continue to try and fix the router, touching something that isn't yours and could just make things worse.

If you had any decency, you'd stop, contact the host, and organise for them to get it fixed, at your expense.

          • @newjerseydamo: I have communicated with the host, screenshotted what I have done and he has supported me. Not sure how I've deflected blame when I said I caused the fault. I'm not trying to fleece the owner regarding the wifi or any refund. Great input and great examples to which you provided zero. I assume you have no idea how to fix anything.

      • Hopefully the Chargers have a better year than your wifi solving ability input

  • Seems to have changed back to a standard one, but I wouldn't say the router default. More like a previous accommodation name without the two options of 2.4 and 5hz and as mentioned, it's public so no verification required. As per above sounds like they didn't save this as the baseline setting and it's defaulted to an incorrect settings. Oh well - have the blood moon!

use the router plug to charge another device.

you dont use a router to charge a device.

At best you've knocked a cable loose. Most likely youve broken their equiptment

  • This is a standard plug (12v DC adaper) used by the router and my device. My device has some protection against third party charges and doesn't charge.

It is a network configuration error. Their equipment is fine.

Thank you for your conclusion but it's neither.

    • I didn't think hand held personal 'massagers' were that intelligent but there you go, learn something new every day.

  • Surprised no one has mentioned this already, but have you tried connecting with WiFi via WPS?

There should be a button on the router with WPS on it. Connect to the WiFi network (should be an option for WPS in all major operating systems, might need to google it), hit the WPS button, and you should be in without needing a password.

If WPS has been disabled, then you'll need an ethernet cable connected to the router.

    • Awesome. It is disabled but I'll try get into the settings. I was able to show the hidden guest networks as they were disabled so I think that was the major issue. Do you think just a modem cycle will fix that as the networks are still not showing after a router reset. Thanks for your help.

      • If you're able to get into the control panel, then I'd try doing a restart through it, not just switching it on and off physically.

Power loss shouldn't mess anything up, consumer routers are designed to be abused and mistreated. If it has screwed it up, then I'd complain to the airbnb host that you don't have internet as advertised, because honestly that's on them for having a crappy setup unless they explicitly said not to unplug it.

        • Thanks. Yeah, thought it was overboard just to pull the power supply considering you'd expect turning it off would cause the same problem I'm having. So you think give it a reset via the admin page? Not having access to the modem is what I think is not allowing the new settings to be pushed on.
