Don't spend a fortune on it and get one that converts to a cot bed or toddler bed. Our youngest would have been in it as a cot for a year before she could climb up over the railing and get out so turning it in to a cot/toddler bed gave it a lot more lifespan. For the first few months she slept in a co-sleeper, then went to the cot and cot bed. She's now just shy of 3 and is already in a "big girl" single bed. So we probably got max 2 years out it but it could potentially last to 4 or 5 I guess.

If you or your partner are short, consider a drop side cot but do be aware of the dangers of them. Check how easy and quiet it is to drop the side with your hands full for those times you forgot to drop it and baby is asleep in your arms. Some you can do with one hand, others require two and the sides are heavy so can be noisy if you drop it accidentally.

Depending on how much you want to spend, Boori make some nice ones, Babyhood does a reasonably priced drop side convertible or if you're on a budget, Kmart have one but no drop side.

Like most baby things, I'd recommend trawling Marketplace and the like as you can pick one up much cheaper. Spend the savings on a good mattress and a co-sleeper instead. But again, if you're getting a used drop side one, be confident in it working/locking properly.

    • Thanks for your advice!! I was looking into the babyhood one!!
I actually do have a hand me down which was given to me a few years ago but I managed to lose the packet of screws :(

Who's the manufacturer? Maybe email their customer service and see if you can get replacements?

        • I have no idea. My friend doesn't know either as he got it as a hand me down as well :9

  • We got two second hand boori cots without mattress. For about $80 each . Then a new mattress

Then a side panel direct from boori to make them into toddler beds.

Kids are 21 months now and their body, when lying down properly is now about 2/3 of the bed length. Good thing the cot is a big cot. Don't get a small cot.

We never co slept. They've been in their own room each since about … 2 weeks old.

We initially used baby rocker chairs that convert to lie down flat when they were tiny.

They're learning to climb into the cot. Not out yet.

  • Get hand me downs where ever you can (as long as they are safe).

  • Yep 2nd hand or hand me down. Just buy a new mattress.

  • 1) See if a friend or relation has one they are not using that is not broken or second hand item on sale.
    2) Get one that has ability to lower or raise the mattress level and the side rail. You will be getting the baby in and out of this thing 30+ times a day :-)
    3) 2nd hand or not, new mattress. they aren’t expensive and a mattress protector

    My experience;

I got one from ikea but was too difficult and bulky to get the baby in and out and to lower the mattress you have to take apart the whole thing that will take you hours + first assembly was a nightmare. I ended up returning this within a week.
I first was not in favour of the bassinets but was lucky to borrow one from a friend and turns out they are super convenient and you need very little space to keep them by side of your bed. Later on when baby outgrew it another friend gave me their cot that had ability to lower the side rail (life saver)

    Good luck.

  • Gumtree for a used cot frame then buy a new mattress that is as firm as you can find and is a tight fit to your cot.

Go 2nd hand Boori cot. Get a new mattress, and you’re good. While the cot converts to bed, I never actually did this for my kids. Also, the fitted sheets from Big W fit the Boori cot mattresses

    • Indeed. Apparently one of my second hand boori cots is 15 years old !

Top tip when buying second hand: look out for fractures before you buy the item. One I was about to buy, very carefully packed and dust free - had a crack due to a kid jumping up and down.

Get wooden coloured ones. Easier to sand and polish to sanitize/prettyfi the bites on the rails.

    • 2nd hand Boori , almost going for the third hand , just get a new mattress.

  • I have an Ikea cot and it's great. It was 2nd hand but never used. I just bought a new mattress but the 2nd hand mattress was never used either.
The railing doesn't drop down but I'm fine with that.

  • I got the Grotime Jiminy cot from Babybunting. It has the dropside and can be turned into a toddler's bed as you wish.
Most importantly, its not as expensive as other high-end brands. Like the others I'd rather to spend more on the mattress than the cot, Jiminy is something within our budget.

We got a second hand boori, kid was a biter and the whole top of it looks like a crocodile has gone mental with all the teeth marks, glad we didn’t buy a brand new one, but this one will likely be firewood when we’re done having kids. He hated being behind bars and wouldn’t settle in the cot from about 9 months, co slept after the first waking for a few months and then went to a regular single bed. Almost 18 months now and sleeps all night in the single bed. Barely got a year of use in all!

    • Oh I just looked at the date of this thread… hope everything has gone well 😂.
