Voltage Converter Help (USA to Au)

Hi there,

I recently bought a Worksharp mk2 knife sharpener. Got it shipped from the US so I need an adapter for it here in Aus. The sharpener is meant for 115v 60hz power supplies only. In Australia the voltage rating of most households is 230v 50hz I believe?

What do I need? Do I need some sort of volt transformer in order for me to use the appliance safely? If so, please send a link of what I need. Bit confused.

Thanks!

You need something like a stepdown transformer to convert AU voltage to US voltage which you plug the sharpener into.

    Jaycar sell them for $49.95

Beware of the el cheapo's from eBay many are not approved for Australian use and do not comply with safety regulations.

on that note guessing the 110v sharpener wont be approved either ;)

yes, you'll need a voltage transformer , not just an adapter to make the plug fit the Australian power outlet.
if you plug it into 240v there is a strong possibility you'll smoke it.! ( as in let the magical smoke out and it'll never work again)

have a look on fb marketplace or gumtree as sometimes expats sell them before moving as they are pretty heavy.

make sure the output is large enough to run the appliance you intend to plug into it.

    and another option is eBay.

  • Get a step down transformer with enough watt capacity to cover the use. I have a step down transformer from Kogan and it was both cheap and good.

Note: Step down transformers do not change the frequency. The knife sharpener may run slightly slower.

    Looks like you'll need a 1000w transformer. https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/1000w-step-down-transformer-gsd…

Edit: The above link is the inverter that comes with the product. Product itself doesn't draw that much power. Double check the specs before ordering.

No, it doesn't have enough capacity. The OP requires at least 1000w.

Huh ? Manufacturers Website says 120VAC / 0.14 amp, which makes according to my math 16.8 Watts. Where did you get the 1000 from ??

        • Same thing I was confused about?

  • Would you say the genpower one is my best option? What about the jaycar one?

  • Why bother to buy any electronic devices from US with different voltage ?

    • Cause availability was low in Australia and I like the product

I have one for a mixmaster, if you were in Canberra I could have given it to you

  • Can someone confirm that I don’t need a 1000w transformer? It says 120VAC / 0:14 amp
