  • 32 bit?

    • I guess someone is still running a P4?

    • Or on a netbook maxed out at 2GB.

    • +1

or has old periferals with no 64 bit support.

    • Or OP doesn't want the complication of a 64bit OS that is not 100% compatible with some games, software, etc.

This is important since Windows 7 Home Premium does NOT offer a "XP Compatibility Mode" like Pro and Ultimate do….

      • You can get upset for this being semantics again, but Windows 7 Home DOES have XP Compatibility program launching but does NOT have "XP Mode", which is a Windows XP Virtual Machine, with a very bad and confusing name.

Furthermore, outside of drivers and other low level software the 32bit libraries are the same even when you install the 64bit version, so there is no effect on such things, moving to 7 at all will be the issue.

        • Thanks for clarifying - that helps me personally. I have recently purchased a Home Premium 3-pack to bring the last 3 of our machines out of the dark ages of XP & Vista, but as of today I have never actually used it. So I dunno whether any of my own stuff will not run.

In the past I've had to use that "XP MODE" VM on 7 Premium to get some programs running. But I wasn't prepared to drop the big $$ for 3 x Pro licences on the offchance.

If I need it, then I will upgrade one box to Pro using that online in-place updater thingy. Or just use a different computer here that has Pro on it.

        • A tip that might help you if you are running the XP VM: The microsoft VM software is not very good, but the VM can be imported into vmware player (free). This works much better.
