Tyre Recommendation - 2016 Hyundai Tucson (225/55R18 98H)

Hi OzBargainers

I need some advice for replacing tyres for my 2016 Tucson. I am currently running the original Nexen N Priz RH7 (225/55R18 98H) tyres have been great with decent wet weather handling and full efficacy and have lasted 75,000km. However, Nexen do not make these tyres anymore and I haven't found much in the way of reviews for the Nexen brand, and I'm reluctant to stick with them as they they seem to be limited availability in Australia.

I live in Melbourne's northern suburbs do around 15,000km per year with mainly city driving with a bit of time on the toll ways during the week, a few trips out of the city in the weekends and a couple of longer road trips throughout the year. I'm looking at spending around the $250 per tyre mark and am after tyres that have in this order
1. Good road grip and wet weather handling/braking,
2. Low noise,
3. Low full consumption,
4. Long lasting. (my current set got close to 75,00km, though wet weather handling and full consumption degraded a lot)

I have been doing some research and have come across a few options and am interested to here your thoughts on these and any other suggestions you all have.

Pirelli - Scorpion Verde All Season 225/55 R18 98 H
Continental - Ultra Contact® UC6 SUV
Goodyear - Eagle LS2H
Kuhmo - Crugen Primium KL33
Yokohama E70
Kuhmo - Solus KL21
Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 001
Michelin Primacy 3 ST 225/55R18 102V

Thanks in Advance

Thanks for the full explanation of your tyre use. Bloody awesome. Can't recommend any specific tyres for you but just wanted to give you a congrats for the well described post.

FWIW I've had good mileage and experience with Kuhmo tyres lately.

    • Thanks MS Paint

Agree with MS. Great info up front with your post. Had a read of the tyres for a Golf thread did you?

        • Thanks Euphemistic. No, haven't seen that thread, I know its a different vehicle but Ill try and hunt it down and see if their has been any good recommendations.

          • @McGeeski: No need. Point being made was that the OP in that bread offered nothing more than ‘I want tyres for this car’. You did substantially better offering usage case.

The other thread is for a light hatch and the tyres recommended may not match your needs.

  • Last week changed the tyres on our Tucson

Went through exactly what you are going through

I think you will find that actually getting most of your selected tyres will be a problem

BE VERY AWARE OF Michelin tyres at the moment. I got 4 fitted and they were made in week 39 of 2018 !!!! I refused to accept them and got them refunded.

I wanted either Primacy 4's (see above warning) or Conti 6's or Ecopia HL001. Stock was nil. Country wide (so I was told)

I ended up with the Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400's at $230 per corner, fitted balanced etc…

Have to say that (so far) they are quiet and no issues in the dry or wet. The previous Kumho's were getting slippy in the wet.

    Good luck

    • Thanks for the incite from a Tucson driver and for the heads up about the age of tyres Oscargamer, I'll will make sure I check out the age of the tyres before they are fitted.

    • Really depends on price and usage. In 3 years time it will probably be time to replace 3 year old (2018 manufactured) tyres regardless of amount of tread left. If 15K km x 3 years - 45K km sounds good to you I don't think the Michelins are going to be a problem. If in the other hand you use the car 5-7K km per year like I do, you would hate to replace tyres after 3 year.

The bottom line is I would take 3-year-old Michelins over brand new Goodride, Winrun, Ilink, Radar, J-Trax, TracMax, Black Diamond etc

I would too. But I'm not buying 3yo Michelins for the same price as fresh Bridgestones.

    • Have been looking for the Dueler H/L 400's, where did you get the for that price? I can't find them for under $300

      • My local Bridgestone dealer. Go in and ask for the HL001's. They won't have any and won't have be able to see any on the system. Get them to phone their supplier and see if they will do a free upgrade (there's a special word they use like 'equivalent' or similar) to the 400's. A simple request from my fitter got me the 400's for the same price as the 001's.

        • Great thanks you.

You can't beat either Bridgestone or Michelin tyres with my preference going to Bridgestone tyres.

Bridgestone often have a 'Buy 3 and get 1 free' deal. If you're not in a hurry it's worth waiting for.

  • Thanks Hithere, I should have replace them about 6 months ago so am limited for time. Any specific Bridgestone tyres you would recommend?

  • Every major brand usually has cheap range, medium range and premium range. I would try to aim for medium range if I could.
Tyresales website is a good start.

  • Michelin has a $100 cashback going on at the moment. My next set of tyres will definitely be the Primacy 4. I'm quite impressed with the pilot sports 4 but need a high mileage tyre for my next set

    • Just check the date stamp on the tyres…….

I am unable to edit my original post to provide and update due to the length of time it's been since the post date but however I want to provide an update as I have found most of the forums on ozbargain and other sites of little help in selecting tyres. I undertook plenty of research in selecting tyres and ultimately decided on the Michelin Primacy 4 for my 2016 Hyundai Tucson.

There was a wide verity of tyres that initially interested me and fit into my requirements (as mentioned in my post), however through talking to specialist and reading numerus reviews and forums I managed to reduce this list. I selected the Primacy 4 for tyres for 4 main reasons, handling in wet and dry, low road noise, good full consumption and value for money. I managed to purchase these tyres from Bob Jane T-mart in Melbourne for $1069 including tyre alinement and wheel balance. Tyre price (as advertised on Bob Jane T-marts website) was $269 each with with $100 discount for purchasing a set of 4 and I paid an additional $90 for the tyre alignment.

While I have only had these tyres for a fee weeks and have done minimal amounts of driving with his limited to city driving due to lockdown, I have so far loved the tyres. Road grip when accelerating, handling corners and when braking is is fantastic and my fuel consumption has decreased.

If I am still able to I will continue to provide updates on these tires.

    • Good on you - sounds like a great outcome. Good tyres are great and now you know that too!
