Opinions on The $500 ‘Temporary COVID Disaster Payment’ in Victoria?

Couple questions to the Ozbargain community about the latest $500 ‘temporary COVID disaster payment’ in Victoria:
1) Do you think the payment is enough? (should it even be there?)
2) What could/should be changed about the payments themselves?
3) Do you think any additional support should be provided to individuals 'slipping through the cracks': Sole traders; Businesses; International students; non-PR/citizen workers
4) Do the payments change your political views/way you view Victorian or federal governements? (Optional question: I don't want this to be politics post).

You can’t get this payment for the first 7 days of lockdown <—- a lot of people will still miss out…

    • Interesting. Didn't realise this part

the bloody stingy coalition government is more interested in giving away billions to their coal and gas friends but doesn't want to chip in to help those in need. They think they wasted enough money on jobkeeper last year. $500 before tax is a joke, not far off from dole payment.

And it is their fault anyway for not implementing better quarantine facilities nationwide. This current outbreak was caused by hotel quarantine in another state so poor Victoria had no control over it at all.

I think it is important people who need help get it, but not just hand out cash to all comers (er…Jobkeeper).
I don't agree with criticisms the payment should be higher - it isn't compensation, it is help if you don't have resources to make it through lockdown.

    • agree with you here. I consider myself onboard with supporting those in need, and my taxes going towards that, but feel the $500/week is more than adequate through lockdowns (atleast for now).

    too much.
if all those teenagers didnt have ipad iphone and all the i thingie, they can have decent saving for rainy days like this

  • My initial thoughts:

    1) Adequate. I figure if your rent is about $300/pw in Melbourne + $200/pw for food and bills, it should be plenty to last lockdowns. I've just heard some people consider the payment not enough, but want to know what I'm missing with this back of the envelope calculation? It's bridging funds to get you through the lockdowns.

    2) Keep it the same if not marginally reduce support to focus on other groups too

    3) On the stakeholders:
    - more could be done to support local business (who ultimately employ staff)
    - more could be done to support international students and foreign workers, even if it's not the same as Aus citizens. Most workers would pay taxes, and international students pay heaps for studies. I figure some basic food support should atleast be available?
Basing the last point on articles such as this: https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/casual-workers-f…

For disclosure, I'm not one of the impacted stakeholders here and fortunate to be continue working. I have no vested interest so it's just my views. Keen to see what others think.

  • It is money to get you through, not replace your income.

Anyone who is struggling with mortgage and bills, I feel for. But a call to your financial institution should see most payments significantly reduced, or paused.

It should be enough to get the necessities which is exactly what should be provided.

Nothing against the 7 day eligibility period either. We can't repeat last year's bad joke - cities locking down for a week over one case in a quarantine guard (e.g. WA) because the feds were effectively paying the bill.

It is a taste of what's to come with their policies to tank the economy and we are forced to rely on hand outs. Next they will attach conditions to the hand outs (getting jabbed being the obvious one).
