Request Council to Plant Tree(s)

Recently I moved into my first home. The pavement in front of my home is large but completely empty for some reason.
Anyone requested council to plan tree(s) before? What is the best council tree available in South Australia ?
I would love an almond tree but not sure of pros and cons. Advice is much appreciated.

P/S: I don't have hayfever but my newborn may develop it later on in her life.

Call your council and ask? There is probably a selection of trees that are acceptable to them.

Whatever they have…. You don't get a 'choice' if you request them to plant something.

Why not GASP plant your own?

    • Some trees are classed as weeds so OP could get in trouble.

Then the OP should look up on the councils website for what is classed as a 'weed' in their area and don't plant that.

There's no way you'd get an almond tree. Council will have a list of approved street trees that they will either supply or supply & plant.

You need to consider if you have any utilities above your nature strip. You also need to plant far enough back that the roots won't crack the gutter and allow opening of car doors.

All the information you need will be on the councils website. If you can't be shagged searching then call the customer service centre.

Or perhaps not. Council came along one day and whacked a whole lot of jacaranda in along our side of the street, under the power lines. If you look at their list of trees you can request it clearly states they're not suitable for planting under power lines. It's also the side that has gas and comms running under ground as well as a footpath.

When did we turn into the council hotline? Stray dogs, parking issues, boundary disputes, overhanging tree issues…

Its the spoon feed mentality of the world today.

        • Instant gratification is strong in modern times. Technology is built to further feed it.

Make the council worker earn their money and it’s their job, people already pay council rates, so make sure it’s used well to serve their community.

        • If someone can advise on how to get the best tree planted then it will be best bang for your rates money! Bargain!

          • @PAPower: ring the council. How hard can it be, passion fingers.

  • Need an example of said pavement for context.

Some places need the pavement for footpaths, service easements, parking spaces.

If it really is a vacant space i'm sure you could request it.
Council's (in my area at least) seem to be on a greening binge.

Many councils will either plant trees for you or have free trees you can plant yourself. They’ll usually be small and take a long time to establish. Or you can buy something yourself but be aware if it’s not an approved species council can remove it. If you plant your own tree that’s not approved and say nothing, chances are you’ll be fine if it’s not an invasive species and doesn’t causes issues with height, roots and branches etc.

A fair few people get hayfever with grevillas, so maybe avoid those if that’s a concern to you. Randomly, my kiddo is allergic to almonds - the very tree you’re thinking of getting (only nut he is allergic to - which according to specialist is unusual but serious) no idea if almond pollen would be an issue, but maybe hold off on planting a nut tree of any kind until you get out of the introducing allergen phase (before 12 months after 4 months, https://www.allergy.org.au/patients/allergy-prevention/ascia…) in case your bub ends up with an allergy like ours did much to our surprise.

A bit off topic but if I went back in time I would have avoided all creams/soap etc with food ingredients when my newborn was under 4months as I suspect this may have sensitised him https://www.abc.net.au/everyday/avoid-skincare-with-food-ing… my skin cream when he was a bub had almond oil in it. Most likely your newborn won’t have any allergies - but I wish someone had told me about the food ingredient skin cream thing when I had a newborn.

What did the council say when you contacted them?

Post a question on Australia's premier bargain site and let us know what they think.

  • clearly the answer is to send the URL for this forum post to the council, and let them vote on what they think is best
