Seems as if you are clicking on the AU link when you have a US account. Please use the right link.

I am not - no offense or attack intended at all. Actually trying to help you get it sorted. Only wrote that as that is what happens to me when I click the wrong link which also happens. Plus I am on mobile doing our volunteer food distribution right now so cannot really write that we'll.
Have you tried a different browser? Or logging in and out? Or going to incognito window and log in there?

          • @Lysander: Thanks must be my account then because tried all of the above.

@ColdFusion: There is something odd going at Amazon. Books show free for me one minute, then not the next one. Very hard to know what's what.

Have you tried doing it from a different device such as a mobile or a tablet? Maybe that will work???

OMG can't believe this is free! Will definitely be reading this to my future kids, thanks OP!

  • It has been free for a long time - nothing to do with amazon; copyright has expired. Many old books are like this and downloadable for free elsewhere. I've had this and many others for years (grimms fairy tales, anything by Edgar Allan Poe etc).

    • I think long time is a bit exaggerated - copyright for Beatrix Potter expired in 2013. If someone else has made the illustrations that particular book could still be in copyright. Rule is author's life + 70 years.

      • it has been available, images too, since 2005. You are right though, a long time could mean anything. 16 years?

It is about that particular book. Not another one.
Given the copyright length prescribed by law which is author's life + 70 years and she died in 1943 I can only assume you got an illegal copy in 2005 or it was a freebie then (but not out of copyright).
I know as a fact that the print copies were still in copyright in 2010 as I was still living in the UK then.

          See here: https://www.managingip.com/article/b1kbpc6lscwlvn/uk-a-copyr…

"As Beatrix Potter died in 1943, the copyright term in her work expired at the end of 2013, and her work has been freely available in the public domain in the UK and other countries since 2014"

I apologise but given the above I must call out your claim it has been free since 2005 a bit of poo poo and not in the good way!

    The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck

Was reading this with my baby as someone bought us the books, man these old stories are messed up. They don't beat around the bush about death lol

    • Agree, have the hard copies, will wait a couple of more years before I revisit.

  • Thanks, OP

  • how are people accessing these? kindle, ipad, etc?

Maybe I need to get a kindle for my kids since that's less of a "screen" than ipad.
