Dettol No Touch Dispenser Replacement

So one of my Dettol No Touch dispensers seems to have finally kicked the bucket. In it's final few days it would randomly dispense two shots every now and again. I gave it a clean up with time to dry and also changed the batteries. Finally a couple of days ago it did the same thing (dispensed randomly) then stopped working, no matter what cleaning or changing the batteries.

Even before now, I checked my local CW (Chemist Warehouse) or my local CWs (ColesWorths…) and they weren't ever there. Now that I really need one I've noticed they aren't found anywhere.

Are they discontinued or something? What's an alternative cheap automatic soap dispenser. The random ones online all seem more pricey than the Dettol ever was.

    • I’m looking at getting one but apparently they are hard to refill once they have ran out, has anyone with one of these refilled it? If so how hard was it and what did you need to do?

A standard pump bottle is pretty reliable and doesn't need batteries.

      No Touch

Unnecessary complexity, particularly for home use.

Great for the kitchen (where this one died) instead of touching stuff with greasy chickeny hands …

        • Use the side of your hand/back of your hand/elbow etc.

It's lasted a few years and I've only changed the batteries once. Got another also a few years old haven't had to change the batteries yet.

General usability or batteries aren't an issue.

I mean I'll go the manual bottle if the options seem a bit pricey but that's a different reason.

Costco has this for under $30 in the Store.

    • Looked at it, today, it was roughly $23. It is, also, designed to be refillable rather than purpose built cartridges.

I got a simple human one which is pretty good. Get the ones that has replaceable batteries and not the ones that charges via USB

This tear down could be helpful? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akmD40Y8hr0

    • I don't mind having a tinker with things to try fix them but that just put me off it more lol. Looks like a messy waste of time.

If I had obviously dropped it or something then maybe incase there was a mechanical fix, but not in this case.

      • Random dispensing sounds like it could be an issue with the sensor. Could be either the IR transmitter or receiver. From the video, taking apart the unit looks like fun to me :D

        • Yeah maybe the sensor or the IR diode kicked the bucket. Something like the Breville grinder is worth toiling over. A gooey oddly built soap dispenser not so much lol.

In the end I'm still surprised it just looks discontinued, not even a replacement model or anything. Pretty sure it didn't cost 30 dollerydoos either.

          • @dufflover: I think the best alternative would be the Xiaomi one on Amazon, not a bad price for a really nice looking foaming dispenser
            https://www.amazon.com.au/Xiaomi-Mijia-Automatic-Foaming-Dis…

          • @dufflover: IR diode and receivers don't die easily since they are plastic encased like a LED. Terminals could be corroded or loose or something.

I'm using something like this. Only gripe I have is that the stainless body is not fully rust proof. It has 3 levels of soap dispensing which is set by short pressing the button on top.

    • I should get my partner to make these sorts of videos. He can't resist pulling things to bits for no reason. Drives me demented. Just because he's an engineer he thinks he can fix things. Most times he can't. With no skills at all, I have managed to fix things that he couldn't!!

      • Fortunately my other half is pretty skilled at getting things going again so I’m willing to accept the odd failure. However, if you can get the advertising revenue, for the pull down, it might be worth the cost of the broken appliances.

However, if you let the magic “smoke” out of an electrical appliance there is, usually, no going back.

I stumbled on this thread as one of my four dettol dispensers died and stopped dispensing. As the other have noted the shops no longer stock this item it seems so I had a go fixing it

Anyway, I found the issue with my faulty unit is caused by corroded wires to the IR diode (under the dispenser snout cover - just pop it off). In my units , there is no sealant whatsoever in that area to guard it from the water.

Clean up the corrosion and solder the wires back in place. I used some hot glue to protect the wires/diode.

All 4 of my units were in various states of corrosion and suffered the same issue. If your IR diode is beyond repair, grab one from an old remote control or AliExpress for 50 cents

Hope this helps anyone with a dead unit!
