Decent CPU Fan for 11400f

Hey all,
Looking to get a decent CPU fan for the 11400F, size is no issue.

I'm wanting to get a cooler that will allow the CPU to reach its 255W target limit without overheating.

Not wanting to go overboard, cooling more important than silence, prefer no RGB.

Not wanting to spend more than I need to.

Thanks.

    • +1 to DR4 or Noctua equivalent. $100 on sale or less, can’t go wrong.

    • Thanks mate, has some great reviews!

  • Let's not go overboard with cooling….Dark Rock 4 is a little extreme for a locked 6 Core CPU even if it's intel. I would look at getting a Cooler Master Hyper 212 ($60) locally or if you can wait for the shipping, AliExpress for a Snowman MT4 ($20) or MT6 ($30) cooler. The MT4 is roughly the same performance to the Hyper 212 and the MT6 is superior (6 contact heat pipes as opposed to 4)

    • Any issues with those coolers if I'm running the CPU to its max 255W?

Edit: Actually, rereading the DF review of the CPU the extra power doesn't do much for gaming, so perhaps don't need to go overboard.

You would be pulling 180w on a blender workload but for gaming i'd say you would be lucky to see 100w-120w. MY advice would be to get the Snowman MT6 from AliExpress. Best bang for buck cooler and goes toe to toe with Noctua 12U or DR4 for less money. See Hardware Canucks review from the other day on Youtube.

    • Hey mate this may be a bit late, but is this the snowman 6 you're talking about? I have no clue about what to select.

      • Yes that's the one

        • Sorry. Bit of a noob, but how will I know which mobo this fits on? I’m going to get a Ryzen 5 5600x and whatever mobo suits both the cpu and the snowman

Edit: also Looking at the no light 2 fan option, but do I select Ryzen am4 socket for the blade quantity?

  • If you can deal with large, get a Noctua D15. /end thread.

    • That's a $170 cooler.
      Seems massive overkill?

      • On an 11400F you're not buying it for temps or overclocking headroom, it'd be purely for noise levels

        • Right, clearly something wrong with my current setup then as using the stock fan I'm getting 90°+ when playing Doom Eternal…

At idle or playing indie games it's only 30-40°

It is a great cooler to keep a machine cool. The fans alone are likely to outlive your current setup. You pay for quality. Cooler temps (helps your computer run faster with less power), quieter running, in my opinion, it's well worth it. I use my machine a fair bit. You might not. YMMV.

Standard fans are mostly fine for general users. They tend to run hotter which can cause thermal throttling, especially when gaming or using CPU bound programs, but generally speaking they're fine.

Why do you think there's something wrong with your current setup? I wouldn't be comfortable with 90 on my system, but it's not outside the realm of what CPUs can take. How much over 90 is it going?

            • @TheBird: Well it's getting hot enough that Doom crashes, I think it peaks around 96-97c then Doom just crashes to desktop.
Happened 3-4 times, I've made changes like toning down the settings etc and then I can play fine, but I want to be able to play at higher settings which should be possible with the CPU.

I appreciate the extra insight, I always wear headphones and have something playing so honestly the sound isn't really an issue so long as it's not extremely noisy, my office is separate from the lounge area so it's not a disturbance.

I was pretty sold on the be quiet! one mentioned earlier, but let me do some more research to see whether the D15 is worth double the price.

It could be thermal throttling happening but I'd expect that'd cause the game to stutter/slow. It shouldn't crash to the desktop but it's possible, depending on how the developers programmed it. Heating wise, it could be that the cooler isn't up to the task or someone didn't put the thermal paste on correctly… or used cheaper thermal paste. If your computer overheated, the whole machine would typically power off (assuming you haven't shut off the safety settings). That being said, the 11400f isn't a slouch but it isn't much of a powerhouse of a cpu. It's only an i5.

Now I have never played Doom (I assume you mean Doom Eternal). I had to look it up. It's a very GPU intensive game. It could be the GPU causing the issue, and since Doom is a GPU intensive game it could be related to your video card, not your CPU. This shouldn't make it crash either, but again, it depends on how the developers programmed it.

That being said, your CPU hitting high 90's on a GPU intensive game, there's likely something wrong with your CPU cooling. It could be only the CPU cooling, or it could be your computers airflow. Today my CPU is running at 26c so you have a comparison.

If I were to make a bet, I'd say it'd be a driver misbehaving or some intermittent hardware fault. Hell, it could be an undersupply of power.

As for the D15, it's just one of the best off the shelf cpu cooling systems. In most circumstances, cooling wise, it performs as good, if not better than off the shelf liquid cooling systems. It's also more realiable and lasts longer. When you're pushing your computer, as you can do with some games, poorly performing cooling systems can make a system unstable. Personally, I'd rather put a bit of extra cash and solve a common issue than have to guess what's causing an issue which in itself can cost a lot of time and money.

@TheBird: Thanks for the detailed feedback, I haven't been free this weekend to check out what the issue is.
But will look into it, you're convincing me to pay more for a cooler now.

                  • +1

@putshan: Just a FYI, it's the same story with power supplies and who put the system together too.

Somewhat also with Memory and storage, but not as much. I used to source and set up editing systems for people. I haven't done it for a while, but I've recently been updating my knowledge of higher end equipment.

I understand people have a budget. There's no better way to waste a budget away than to buy wrong and spend four times to not only replace the hardware, but pay someone to do it and suffer the downtime. When it costs editors $800+ a day for the downtime, it's a no brainer to get components that decrease instability. The same goes to those who aren't that computer literate. Trying to fix a problem when you don't know much about it makes most people's blood boil as you need to rely upon strangers speaking a foreign language while charging you a fortune to help you.

Those who skirt the line are those who know what to do, how to diagnose and have what's needed to diagnose on hand… or spare hardware. Usually experienced computer people…

That all being said, my missus has a lesser cpu fan in her machine. It's only a $60 (or so) fan. She demanded one that has those programmable RGB lights on it. It runs hotter than my system, even after we spent an additional $120 on extra intake/exhaust fans. She doesn't do higher end games on it, so it rarely gets pushed hard for extended peroids. You'll get 80% of the way for a lot less. Just be aware, that 20% makes a difference when your system is constantly getting pushed hard.

One thing I didn't mention with the D15. Don't move your computer often. It's a big unit and the stress from weight has been known to crack motherboards when moved. Not only that, I had to get a larger case to fit it.

                    • @TheBird: Thanks again mate, last night I had a look at the cooler and one of the sides wasn't properly set, so I gave it a good push and it locked into place.
Tried Doom again and temps were around 60c so that seems to have been the issue I think.

I'll still look to buy a better cooler as I'm sure over summer things will be a lot worse and I do want to push the system a bit, especially after seeing plenty of good games at E3.

Oh… That isn't good. and yeah, summer does make it hard on a computer, especially if you don't have aircon.

What video card do you have?

                        • @TheBird: Currently have a GTX1070
Hoping to upgrade to a 30xx series if they ever become reasonable/available.

                          • @putshan: Yeah, keep your 1070. I've never used one, but they run fairly hot from what I remember. If I remember right, the founders edition ones have a blower type cooler, so you don't have to worry as much about extracting hot air from the system.

30 series. I was looking at getting one to start learning ML programming… those prices. Just nuts. It seems they're estimating the issues will continue well into next year, if not the year after… but Crypto has been falling and Nvidia have some decent performing/interesting Crypto specific cards, so here's hoping that'll offer some early relief.

      • It's a $120 cooler for the brown/beige, $150 for the black version. Could probably go for the older nh-d14 though for $110, although I think the extra $10 is worth it, if not just for the aesthetics of the d15 over the d14.

        • Where is it $120?
I'll buy it at that price.

  • how can we enable 255 W TDP mode?
