Faulty (Smoking) Kogan/Dick Smith 12L Digital Air Fryer - Expert Electrical Opinion Required

We have the somewhat popular Kogan/DS 1800W Digital Air Fryer that we've been using daily for about 3 mths now. Just a few days ago a horrendous burning plastic smell started to emit from the unit. Upon opening the door, smoke could be seen emitting from the space around the lower door hinge.

Removed the top cover and found the door micro switch was melted. Not sure if it's due to dodgy design or a faulty switch? The way the switch works is that it switches the live power between 2 circuits, in such a way that when you open the door (to check on food), the fan and heating element turn off, leaving the timer and settings on.

Did a quick google and did not see anyone else with this issue. Just looking at the way it's wired made me wonder if this was a good idea, to have 230v AC from the wall (the top most red wire) directly passing through what looks like a cheap switch image 1 image 2?

If you paid via PayPal, just send it back.

  • Won't recommend bypassing any switch on a permanent basis. If you cant return it, do try to get the same switch installed or if you cant source switch and are not left with any other option to bypass it, bypass and operate outside your home few times. Once you put it in your kitchen, clearly mark a warning label indicating not to open the door when in operation. Also check if its gonna effect your home insurance.

I'm not an expert (sorry). But if its 3 months old, its in warranty, so just return it.

    It's dead Jim.

  • Buy it some nicotine patches

Why not contact Kogan for a warranty claim instead of pulling it apart?

Most likely a 1 off failure, they do happen from time to time.

Shock horror, a cheap Chinese airfryer sold by the dodgiest people in retail, is cheap and dodgy.

  • Yes it should be warranty, but was just curious as to what was causing the smell. The question I had was mainly if 230v should be switched directly through one of these micro-switches. Doesn't seem proper to me, but my knowledge of AC circuits is limited so I was hoping someone in our diverse ozb community might be able to shed some light - sparky or engineer perhaps?

    • It says right there on the switch that it's rated for 240v.

  • Hi, I have just received our air fryer from Dickies / Kogan a week ago. Was pleased with the product, until we were cooking a roast last night. I would open the door to check on the roast we would hear a loud electrical arcing sound, and the machine would keep on cooking with door open. This was happening from here on in, plus then the machine would not turn off. I have unplugged the unit and contacted Dickies for them to pick up and full refund me. Will not buy from them again, even if it may only be a few with a fault. Not worth saving a few bucks if you can not trust the product.

  • They will probbaly refund you w/o picking the unit up. In which case if you open the unit you may see a switch on the base that might have burnt out, same issue that we had. If this switch is bypassed then the unit should work again though it will continue to cook with the door open.
