Boat Anchor Winch without Chain?

Hey guys I got a small fiberglass boat, 4.5m long.

My issue is when throwing an anchor I got no access from the boat to the anchor. We have to climb to the sides, which is not large and unsafe, same to retrieve the anchor. I'm thinking in buying this Free Fall 45 Electric Anchor Winch Saltwater Boat Winch Wireless Remote Control

Has anyone used or can give me an idea if this should work? My main issue is that cannot have chain, only rope so I'm thinking it will drag?

  • No chain is no good. Get a drum winch.

Ive read this 3 times and still struggling to work out what the problem is.

I always tied a rope to the chain attached to the anchor and manually pulled it up that way.

Unless you are anchored in 30+ meters deep water why do you need a winch?

    Maybe I've misunderstood your issue?

    • Hey i own a 4.5 m fiberglass boat my issue is i font have any access to the front of the boat where the anchor is, I have to climb from the sides as if i climb from the front i will break the windscreen. When climb in the side of the boat it gets very unstable and other day i nearly fall in the water and was about 3 bull sharks next to my boat lol…. if i had easy access to anchor i wouldnt mind just trying figure out how can I do then.

      • Without seeing your boat and knowing how its constructed a couple of options I thought of -

        1) Modify your windscreen so that it is hinged at the bottom so you can lay it forward

        2) Get the centre of the windscreen cut out and install a hinged or sliding door out of clear windscreen material

Both options will cost a bit but as you own a boat, (Bring Out Another Thousand), you'd be used to it.

        • I see that as a better option. I can imagine a cheap winch jammin or failing on a regular basis

OP has a small boat with poor access to be able to pull up the anchor manually. They therefore want some sort of electric winch, however the winch they have linked has no provision to be able to wind up chain.

+1 for community service to OzB.

It's the least I can do. I have to translate people's vague ramblings into something legible almost daily.

        • How much do you think you spend on ozb a day? mine easily hits an hour on average via webtime tracker.

  • The chain is an essential part of the anchor. It won't work well without it.

    • Yep my toughts ah

3 bull sharks next to my boat

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

    • Yep maybe soon :)
