Double Size Mattress under $700 - Any Suggestions?

Hi All,

I am looking to buy a double size mattress for my spare room under $700. It should be firm and comfier. No preference for memory or spring. I am a side sleeper. Any input or suggestion will be appreciated. No backpain as such.

Thank you

Chriopedic had some around that price when on sale last month. But there was a noticeable difference between that and those twice as much.

    • Thanks, I will surely check this.

Check out a Harvey Norman clearance outlet. There was an extra 10% off at our local one for the whole month of June. We found a really nice Sleepmaker pocket spring mattress in a king size for $800.

The number 1 mattress recommended by Choice this year is the Emma Mattress which would come in well under budget for you with the current discount of 45%. You can also get a decent amount of cashback via cashrewards. There's 100 night satisfaction guarantee too. I'd recommend testing out firm foam mattresses in shops though before you order one though, as foam mattresses are uncomfortable for some people.

    • Thanks, I ll check my local HN store. Been using Ikea hylestead queen size spring mattress since 5 years. No complaints so far. Have really no idea on Sleepmaker and Emma mattress. Definitely will check them out.

  • CHOICE rates the Hyllestad as soft - the Emma Original and Comfort as medium.

    • Thank you very much. Are you using Emma original. Now a little bit inclined towards Emma. Lets see.

Buying a mattress is perplexing. Trying to pick one out at a shop is useless. You would have to sleep on a mattress there overnight to get a good idea of its suitability. Even if you did that you are not guaranteed of a good result because mattresses are different new to what they will be after being, ah, bedded in.

The only way I can see to get an unbiased opinion based on rigorous testing is to rely on the results of consumer testing organisations like CHOICE. Even though I oftren find CHOICE recommendations perplexing.

Go for hotel quality mattresses (Sleepmaker etc). Hotels put a lot of emphasis and rating on good quality mattresses.
