Looking for Traditional Cake Shop in Sydney CBD, Inner City or Eastern Suburbs

As per the title, I am looking for a traditional cake shop in Sydney CBD, inner city or Eastern suburbs of Sydney. I am after what I think these days is known as a 'continental cake' (sponge layers, custard or cream between, nuts or cream on the outside). Yes, it's considered old-fashioned, but that's what the 80 year old Birthday Girl that I am buying for wants.

I know of Wilson's cake shop in Mascot, but they tend to make better individual cakes than whole ones. My last resort is the Cheesecake shop or a Christopher's cake shop, but I am hoping to find some independent cake shop that still makes traditional whole cakes.

    I can recommend this: https://ppapa.com.au/portfolio_page/continental-cake/
Had this a few times (Italian family) and its really nice! I've only bought from the Haberfield and Five Dock stores, but there's a store in Bondi and I assume you can pick one up there. If you call ahead they'll write on it too

Thanks. It's good to know the cakes meet approval.

I think most of the traditional cake shops left Sydney CBD many years ago due to rising rents. There used to be a cake shop in Town Hall station where I used to buy passionfruit iced, cream filled sponge cakes. About $5 each but they left about 20 years ago. Now it's all fancy cakes from the likes of Black Star Pastry, Lorraine's and La Renaissance.

I think Coles still does sponge cakes from time to time but icing sugar dusted, but hardly worthy of an 80th birthday.

CBD cakes has fancy sponge cakes but perhaps give them a call for a custom sponge. https://www.cbdcakes.com.au/product-category/cakes/sponge-ca…

There also used to be a good one at the Met Centre. I agree that it's likely they were priced out of the market. And if they do exist, they're not the type to have a fancy website.

    https://pasticceriatamborrino.com.au/ in Five Dock.
You can beat them if you are after a traditional one.

    • I've found their quality has deteriorated over the years :(

Try Born to Bake Greek in Eastlakes. They can bake to order, made fresh on premises and their cakes are tastier, cheaper and better quality than Christopher's Cakes.

  • Thanks everyone.

I ended up with a cake from Pasticceria Papa. The Birthday Girl was happy.
