Potential Transmission Issue on 1998 Peugeot 306

I'm considering buying a 1998 Peugeot 306 as it seems a pretty decent buy so far. However I got it checked by the RAA and they noticed a potential issue with the transmission, noting:

"Transmission fails to select 4th gear when driving at 60 kph for several kms, requires further investigation"

I spoke to the dealer and he said that that was one of the first things he checked himself and that the car will slip into 4th when it hits 65 kph, rather than 60 kph. Am I just being feed bullshit or is this legit?

    Warning signs so far :

    1) Its a Peugeot.
    2) Its 23 years old.
    3) RAA have told you it's an issue.
    4) A used car salesperson is talking.

    • Damn, 1998 was 23 years ago?

      • Yes, and a Peugeot is not a DeLorean either…

      A perfect summary.

    • Well summarised. Also important that Peugeot warning comes before that it is 23 years old :)

  • no, just walk away…

Just no! You don't want this problem.

Steer clear.. Peugeot's are fantastic cars but if you want reliability buy a manual or one with the Aisin automatic transmission.

    • But do they come with an Aisin though?

      • Not this one. Only more recent Peugeot's after 2010. Peugeot's are great cars and very reliable so long as you do your research, buy the right model and look after it.

    1) No
    2) No
    3) No

It's an old, euro car on its last legs.

as it seems a pretty decent buy so far

    Really?

    • Well yeah, it only had 95,000 KM on the clock, was very tidy and had a full servicing history, with parts replaced when need be.

      • +1

        Except the transmission

      • average of 80km/week seems low, but that age sure is going to cause some issues

      • I assume it's almost free?

I would only buy this car if you wanted a fun project money pit of endless despair

      FTFY…

I would only buy this car if I had a monster truck and needed some cars to drive over at a show.

  • I spoke to the dealer and he said that that was one of the first things he checked himself and that the car will slip into 4th when it hits 65 kph, rather than 60 kph.

    Did you verify this yourself?

Am I just being feed bullshit or is this legit?

Take it for a drive and see if it changes into 4th at 60 or 65…..

  • I spoke to the dealer

    Q) And why would the dealer lie to you?

    A) Because that's what dealers do, they aren't your friend.

  • Common issue in 306/307 auto boxes

    AVOID

  • Just walk my friend and never turn back.

i am surprised you founded a Peugeot made in the last century that still running. Were they paying you to take it away?

  • +5

    This is peak trolling.

After they sell you the car it is your problem, there is no warranty on a vehicle that old.
Just remember, if a salesmans lips are moving, they are lying.

  • My partner had a 2002 Poogeot - transmission issues. Had more than $6k in warranty work done on it before the dealership said 'take me to court, im not spending any more money on this car'.

Was worth scrap by the time she was done with it (7 years).
Somehow kept working with transmission issues - infact the more it was neglected, the better it seemed to drive.

But as above, avoid like the plague.

    Needed a good laugh
