Is It Possible to Get a Kogan First Refund? (I Forgot to Cancel)

Hello,

I forgot to cancel my free 14 day trial for Kogan First, and thus have been charged $50, is it possible in any way to get a refund on this?

Has any one been successful with this?

    Really?

This was the first answer in Google when I typed "Kogan First refund"

    1. Cancelling your Kogan First Membership
You may cancel your Kogan First membership at any time by logging into your Kogan account. selecting Kogan First from the menu, and then clicking "Cancel Renewal".
If you cancel any time after signing up for a paid membership or converting from a free trial to a paid membership, you will not be refunded your membership fee regardless of whether you made any eligible purchases or have taken advantage of any Kogan First benefits. You will continue to receive all Kogan First benefits until the end of your Membership Period, but your membership will not be automatically renewed for a further Membership Period.

    TLDR: No.

  • I'm in a similar situation but they signed me up for the yearly membership instead of the free trial.

In preparation for the airpods pro deal I went to the website and saw that their were 2 options to get Kogan First. The 14 day free trial, even though I've used it before and the $49 a year membership. I proceeded to select the trial and it came back with an error and wouldn't go through, as expected.

Then I went onto the app and noticed the same options. Selected the trial and ordered it. It went though. Then I see the expiry as June 2022 then I knew they (profanity) up. Saw the $49 charge. Immediately sent them a message 8 mins after and another 30 mins after.

They replied later saying nothing can be done. I will request a chargeback with my bank. Anyone else I should complain to?

    • Believe it or not. Same thing happened to me a few month ago…
In that particular instance, I got my money back..

      • What did you say for them to do that?

        • I just accused them of ‘entrapment’, ‘bait and switch’
          Similar stuff

Coz I clicked on the free trial option as it showed up on my screen, even though technically I wasn’t even eligible for it…
It still said 14 day free trial with Kogan First..
I told them how dodgy that was..

And as a ‘one time thing’, they refunded me my money….

          • @Gervais fanboy: I was the same, I emailed and said I have already disputed with the bank. Both the bank and Kogan refunded me so I've contacted the bank again to take it back!!
I immediately took a screenshot after as the screen still claims I can have a 14 day trial and told them to report to their IT team.

            • @Trillian: Hey there. I'm in the same board what should i do? What did you wrote in the email to kogan? And how did to disputed with the bank?. Never had this type of experience so any help will be appreciated:)

              • @kingkhan1990: Just had this same issue, there's no confirmation after you start clicking around in Kogan First, it jsut subscribes you to the yearly plan! Not impressed at all! If they don't refund I will do a chargeback

Nah, not possible to get a refund on this. Lesson learnt, right?

  • Yes - go back in time and cancel it. Then come back to the present.

      Good one!

  • I forgot to cancel my free 14 day trial for Kogan First

The answer to " is it possible in any way to get a refund on this?" will be no. You didn't complete your end of the agreement. You failed to cancel, not Kogan.

Yes, I did cancel mine and was refunded.

      I sent below email

"Got kogan first activated by accident and now have to pay $11.99

Please cancel my membership and refund $11.99"

      they replied

      "Thanks for your email.

I understand you have had some issues with your Kogan First membership.

As a gesture of goodwill we would be happy to provide you with a refund of $11.99

We will also cancel your ongoing membership, so that you do not incur any further fees, unless you choose to sign-up again in the future.

Your refund will be processed within 3-5 business days."

    good luck

  • I'm in the same boat, trying to cancel this now and get a refund.

  • Thanks for funding the 1 cent SIM deal.

  • nope, should have put a reminder in your calendar. thanks for reminding me, i need to cancel mine, lmao.

  • I've been getting charged for this and have NO RECOLLECTION of ever even seeking a trial. It's like they just automatically did it when I bought one of their sim packs/deals. Very frustrating.

  • My Dad accidentally signed up for Kogan First. He's a bit computer-illiterate, so he likely purchased something, selected their 'Free shipping with FIRST' option, not realising what it was. 14 days later, he gets an email saying he's been charged $60.

For posterity: I sent an email on his behalf and they made a "one-off goodwill gesture" and cancelled and refunded. So yes, it's possible.

If the product stated a 14-day trial, yet it charged you immediately then it's a mislabelled product. It should be considered a false advertisement.

This is exactly what happened to me! I activated the 14 day free trial, and checked back 2 days later to cancel but had already been charged?! Sent Kogan a message but no reply yet. Also contacted my bank. Will see how I go… $79 they stole from me, unauthorised transaction from a false advertisement.

  • We'll, they've hit an all time dodgy now…

Mine was cancelled (yea, I have no screenshot proof) but I've just been charged renewal.

Here's the clincher…terms and conditions state they will take payment from credit card used initially or any other card/payment method on your account if that fails.

They transacted through afterpay. I have no payment methods on account. I believed you need to have interaction to use afterpay such as password, one time code or bio recognition??

As per Kogan first terms and conditions 5c:
Payment of the Membership Fee must be with a valid credit card.

    Part 6e states:
If your preferred payment method is invalid or the charge is refused at time of your scheduled membership payment, you authorise us to use any other payment method we have on file on your Kogan.com account. If all payment method attempts on file are declined or refused, Kogan reserves the right to cancel your membership immediately.

    • Edit: somehow they added a 14 day trial on 22nd December when I ordered something with free shipping anyway. Must have been in the stealth checkout.

Still doesn't explain how they can debit afterpay.

  • I'm in the same boat. Can anyone tell me what should i do?? They took the money through afterpay and i thought i canceled their membership.please help

    • Apparently afterpay now have a subscription payment service so it actually was 'legit' to charge it to afterpay, but not legit when you never agreed to the trash.

I contacted both afterpay and Kogan. Afterpay came back fast thinking it was cyber theft but then concluded that Kogan was a regular vendor of my past purchases and advised to return the product for a refund.

Had to spell out it was not a physical returnable product to take delivery nor return of but rather a digital membership subscription not asked for or consented to receive.

That did it. Afterpay transaction reversed.

Strangely enough, I poked around afterpay mobile site (not app) and found the subscription service area. Low and behold there was a Kogan first entry there with completely different dates. Killed that.

Then Kogan contacted me and said blah, once off, blah, goodwill, blah…

For all this goodwill, it would be better used in running a platform that gives an option to sign up for their shitty membership instead of digitally force feeding it.

I would be happy to pay for it if it had free shipping. I can order to home metro postcode for free, but work postcode, 3 hours away is not free. I don't want parcels sitting on the porch.

  • I can't speak for the two Afterpay users above as I've never used it, but I got stung on the 7th after making a PayPal purchase 14 days earlier on the 24th of Dec. My fault for not reading into it.
    HOWEVER.

I immediately cancelled my subscription once charged, submitted a help request, which was met with an automated response explaining random charges from Kogan likely being a FIRST membership. This automated response said to respond with "HELP" if it did not answer my query.

In my HELP reply I explained that I had no intention of signing up, that I received no reminder about being charged, that the 3 day reminder of being billed in the account settings was unchecked by default. I said it felt like this was entrapment and I would be seeking a chargeback if needed.

As per other commenters above, they quickly agreed to a refund as "a one-off goodwill gesture", and a day later I've received notice from PayPal that my refund is on its way.

    Hopefully this helps someone else.

  • Thanks Jeanie,

Incidentally, for the record, I would be happy to subscribe to Kogan first if it was truly free postage.

I can get items delivered to my home address in 4165 for free but I work away 9 days a fortnight and delivery to 4655, 3 hours up the road, is not free.

If my partner is not at home for a day or two, the delivered package is subject to theft so I prefer to have things delivered to work.

I hope I don't need to go through this process again because Kogan has implemented stealth tactics in having customers unknowingly start a 14 day trial through the checkout process.

The product I purchased in this instance was from a marketplace seller and had free postage anyway, so there was literally zero benefit to have Kogan first force fed to me.

To summarise, if Kogan first had suitable benefits, maybe the product would sell itself without unscrupulous entrapment necessary.

    Regards
