Amazon Prime Day - Why So Underwhelming?

For the 2nd year in a row I feel like Prime Day has been a huge let down. I recall when living in the US Prime Day was a huge event and although was just one day, I made some significant purchases. Have I become a cheapskate, or most if not all deals were incredibly underwhelming?

    This is not the US

I just love all the tech youtubers doing their Prime day deals and then the same product on Amazon AUS is 30230230203203 dollars or unavailable

Just as good for me as previous. Mostly stocked up on pantry items. Coke at 50c per can is as good as it gets. Red bull at $1.12 per can is winning. Coconut water was the cheapest I've seen, and baby items were heavily discounted.

Yeah I think this is where the big bargains are in Pantry items. There are a few other good deals like the Headphones but I think the Australian Amazon is also missing items like discounted Apple Products that appear on their other international sites.

I would've been happy if I hadn't missed out on that Roborock S5 Max deal. I did buy a few things, but not all that many bargains on the things I want or need.

    • Why start such a deal in middle of night, I settled with S6 pure.

  • under for you, over for others
    we are unique creatures

  • chia has destroyed HDD market, I was waiting for HDD deals.

    • There was a 10tb Toshiba that was about as good as you'd find anywhere but you had to be quick.

I signed up to prime just to save on toiletries in this sale

Yea nothing that compelling mostly essentials, and a lot of sell-outs on popular items very early on, with way less stuff on day 2. I also didn't like that prime deal page (on Amazon not Ozb) was so crowded and populated mostly by no-name items

Even the free international shipping wasn't compelling because everything I had saved in my cart jumped up in price

Something something Capitalist conditioning, something something illusion of value…

  • International Shipping is uber-expensive at the moment, and has been since October 2020.
Pricing dipped slightly through March, but is trending back up to (I suspect break through) record high pricing.
Added to this, shipments are being seriously delayed.
I've got containers coming into their 5th week of delay.

I still picked up a few things, but not nearly as many as last year and my average spend was also significantly lower per item.

I looked for a while but ended up bored as there was nothing available that I really needed and was a big enough bargain for me to bother with.

  • I felt it was a little bit over hyped. Sure I got some Tabasco sauce and toilet paper but what I really wanted was new headphones and they sold out in around 1-2 hours while I was working so I missed out - left me feeling a bit ripped off and jaded that a few weeks of anticipation was wasted because I wasn't "on the ball" enough to get the deal I actually wanted.

ie/ I dont think I should have to pay a monthly fee to take part in an effective lottery on good deals.
