Is Paint Protection worth it?

Hi all - I’m getting a new car and was wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on Paint Protection?

Is it worth getting? The car will be spending most of it’s time outside so I was leaning towards yes.

    Not from the Dealerships no.

Depends on the car. A Mazda 3? No. A unique hypercar? Sure.

    Value of car?

Potentially yes - but not via the dealership.

Yes - but not by the dealer, get it done asap however.

Dont let the ming moles win.

  • Just a waste of money !

  • for those that say no to paint protection at dealerships, can you recommend a business that i can enquire… getting a new car delivered in a couple of months and would like to see how much it would be

Don't worry about it. You will be in lockdown.

Based in Lane Cove. Ceramic coat was done for my Qashqai for about $900 if I'm not mistaken. They can provide a car loan too. Check their FB page.

      • thanks.

I had Brilla coat applied at the beginning of 2020. Had a warranty and as part of that warranty I had to take car back every 12 months for a checkup.

I did only to be told that Brilla had gone out of business and I would have to pay for any touch ups.

Sharing this because this guys did Brilla coating as well.

    • Dealerships just get someone else to do it anyways and charge you a premium, they do the same shit with window tint

  • Paint protection is useless. If you're going to do it, do it properly and get PPF.

Yes but depends who does it and what it is.

Highly recommend ceramic coating a car, particularly if black. Got it done on my WRX STI and its looks awesome. DIY it on my daily and came up amazing too but recommend you get it professionally done.

  • Got my new car ceramic coated but not from the dealership. A well known and highly rated guy in Melbourne did it for around $800.

Very highly recommend a ceramic coating, the water just beads straight off the car and when it comes time to washing, it's an absolute breeze. Looks brand new still around 6 months later with a lot of off-roading since new.

If you have the money you can go even further and get paint protection film which is meant to be excellent, but costs much more.

    • Who did you get it done by?

Buying a new car soon that I want to get ceramic coated, I've done a bit of research into places but keen for some recommendations.

Jimmy at Fine Shine Detailing in Port Melbourne.

Check out his reviews on Google, he's very, very good. You might need to Google 'Fine Shine Paint Protection' and you'll see it come up.

        • Haha that's actually the place I was leaning towards, he's got amazing reviews on google!

I've been told that a good combo is PPF on high-risk areas, followed by Ceramic all over.

    OzB thoughts?

Most say its a waste of money. Search oz bargain for previous threads on it.

    From a dealer: Hell no.
By a reputable aftermarket retailer: depends on the car
For a cheap car: not really, just wash it.
For an average car: depends how long you want to keep it. A quick polish before you sell will make it look 90% if you don’t.
For a fancy car (something that enthusiasts want, not a top spec Camry or budget bmw): possibly.

When your new car salesman tries to convince you to get it ask them why they think their paint is so bad it needs special treatment straight out of the factory.

  • As other have said above, the dealership offers are garbage. It's always a crappy product and way overpriced. Professional detailer applied ceramic coating (or PPF if you you want a bit of extra protection from stone chips, etc) is closer to being 'worth it' if having a car that is easier to clean and somewhat more resistant to holding onto dirt and grime is important to you. I'm a believer in ceramic coating for my cars, but other people's view on whether it's worth it will differ.

  • I think good quality aftermarket ceramic paint protection is worth it. In the past, I'd usually wax my cars every 3 months and polish every 6-12 months. Ceramic paint protection means that for the next 9 years, all I need to do is wash it (properly of course!) and it will take care of itself, so there's a massive time saving for me. And even compared to a good quality wax, paint protected with a proper ceramic product is so much easier to wash and keep clean. I did my daily myself and had my partners' car done professionally with GTechniq Crystal Serum Ultra. I wouldn't DIY again, but I'm rapt at my partners' car.

    • Do you mind me asking how much it cost for someone to apply the GTechniq Crystal Serum Ultra?

  • If you drive a lot and you have a nice car, yes. If you are based in Sydney you have tinthaus, https://www.tinthaus.com.au/services/vehicle-paint-protectio….
It's worth at least get a quotation.
