I'm Still Running a 2nd Gen Intel Setup! HELP!

Hey guys,

I have dabbled with the idea of upgrading my PC for a LONG time, the idea has always just died down because 'don't fix what's not broken'. I hardly use it for hard gaming anymore as a lot of my friends were playing on the PS4.

I think its finally time i dipped my toes into a new setup.

Current Setup:
NZXT H510 Mid
i5 2500k @ 4.19GHz
H80i AIO Cooler
GTX 970 4GB
10GB RAM
CX600M ATX PSU
1TB HDD
128 SSD

What i will be keeping from old setup:
NZXT H510 Mid
CX600M ATX PSU
1TB HDD
128 SSD

Here is what i have picked out so far:

I don't have a set budget for the build yet (dont suggest me anything crazy and over the top) but willing to pay to have a nice future proof machine. Looking around 1.7-2k

I have no idea how the current landscape is for PC building. Is it cheaper to do part by part or buy a fully set up rig? (i do enjoy building them though)
What's the best combo for future proofing these days? I know GPUs are hard to come by these days due to crypto and chip shortage, what are my options there?

PS: i am mainly looking to get into Halo Infinite / BF2042

Appreciate any helpful advice!

TIA

You are missing one key piece of information in your post… a budget!

    • You are right! - Updated

You should upgrade your SSD harddisk to M.2 NVMe one
read /write speed is 3-5 times faster than SATA3 SSD
loading operating systems and games will also bring massive difference

  • "I don't have a set budget for the build yet but willing to pay to have a nice future proof machine"

    This is not the budget.

    Prebuilts are cheaper atm.

    As for your own build:

As for future proofing, I think the 5600X is the right CPU (performance to price) - also can make use of the AIO cooler you're planning to buy.

C16/3600 16GB RAM - keep in mind that DDR5 ram is already out but not sure when it'll be fully utilized.

With how cheap SSDs are, NVMe 500gb+ is the way to go.

Might need to upgrade your PSU depending on what GPU you get.

I thought you meant a Pentium II. Was well impressed until I followed the clickbait.

    • I was thinking an 8088 or something…

  • That mobo seems way overpriced, should be able to get a decent B550 or even X570 for that much. Pretty sure the B450 Tomahawk MAX, meant to be the bang for buck B450 king way better than that ASRock board, are under $150 now - and if you don't need full size ATX you could get the mATX B450 Mortar for cheaper or the bang for buck lower level MSI B550 boards mATX ATX - both similar VRM to the B450 Tomahawk but the newer B550 chipset

    • Hey mate thanks for the reply ill have a look at those options and switch up my list!

  • how old is your psu?

  • I would not keep a power supply that is over 5 years old, they degrade over time, chances are likely it will blow up sooner rather than later and probably take the rest of your pc with it. Using it with the current pc doesnt matter cause its so old its basically worthless even if it blows. However if you spent all this money on new parts and they got taken out by an old psu you would really regret not spending the $150 to get a new one.

as for what you have picked, a 3600 runs fine on the heatsink it comes with the aio is a waste of money.

    • Cheers, i did not realise they could degrade so ill definitely be picking up a new one if that's the case. Would i be able to reuse the old one with the old hardware if i want to make a spare PC out of it?

      • Sure can.

i just upgraded this year from 1st gen core i7 to Ryzen 5600x (bought a new prebuilt) loving it!

  • I thought I was the only one!

    GTX 970
