Smart Powerpoint with Energy Monitoring

Hi guys,

Do you know any good power point with energy monitoring that has Australia standard? I found one here but not sure about the quality and usability of that device.

And do you know any device that can monitor a split air con power consumption?

These are 10A sockets so are you sure your split system is wired in a 10A circuit ?

This, split system likely has its own circuit, wired directly to the fuse box with its own breaker.

      • If you have a smart meter your electricity wholesaler would most likely provide you access to a portal with near real-time power usage stats. This would be the easiest and no-cost option to find out about power consumption of the AC by looking at the spikes in the graph when the AC is turned on.

        • no, distributor portal is almost always 1 days behind, same as retailer portal

      • I thought the same as well, unless it was a portable one on wheels?

      • The EM device for air-con is another question, I didn't ask to plug it to a socket power point. Besides, I want to monitor to know as much accuracy as possible, not guessing by the spike graph.

  • You CAN monitor many hardwired devices if you get an energy meter with clip-on contactless sensors. Just find a safe spot with the 'active' wiring accessible e.g. behind your dedicated breaker and you can monitor anything you like. I've got one that's also wireless to the base station.

They don't work around an active + neutral pair like an extension lead, as the current flow balances out - it has to be only the active line that's clamped

  • Bunnings has a version with energy monitoring (and usb ports).

Its LIKE this one, but has USB as well. I've only ever seen it instore and not online.

There are plug in ones too like

    • those one are not the one I asked. I did some researches before. Bunnings are selling non -EM devices. And I don't want plug in, but the powerpoint socket by it self

Did you read what I said?

My local bunnings has one LIKE that WITH EM, its slapped all over the box, oddly not listed online.

Its part number is 206920HA, you can see the box here on a ebay listing, clearly says EM.

        Thanks for coming.

        • thanks for the input. I didn't see "LIKE" before, maybe I should go see Specsavers.

          • @ntt: yeah no idea why Bunnings doesn't have the 206920HA listed online, they have it in store. So if that is the style you're after, then have a look in store.

I thought air conditioners had to be separately wired on their own circuit (not through a powerpoint), an exception to the rule being the old "window rattler" type (box in the window).

Having said that, Powermesh does energy monitoring. Anecdotally, Trader seems to be a good brand.

If you end up changing it to it's own circuit, Shelly or Sonoff are both well regarded brands that have behind-wall products that do energy monitoring. Just make sure you get the Australian Certified version/s.

    • that's interesting. I have the Trader brand in our house, their quality not as good as Clipsal I think. Do you know how much and where to buy those Powermesh? I can't see anywhere to buy those things? and do they need a hub to manage?

      • Yeah ok - that's why I said anecdotally; some of the sparkies at work (and ones I trust, too) reckon it's alright.

Looks like most wholesalers either stock it or would be able to get it in (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=trader+powermesh+-site%3Awww.gsme.…). Don't have pricing without a login, unfortunately. Being a power point you'll need an electrician to install them.

The units use Bluetooth to connect to each other (making a mesh network like ZigBee) and to your phone. No hub required for that. But if you want Cloud connectivity for remote control (as in away from home) or Voice Assistant control, then there's a hub you'll need
