Cars Parked Too Close to Driveway Exit - Is Putting Stickers on The Cars a Solution?

Hi all,

I am a quiet bloke that lives on a busy road. To drive the car out of the unit block is tricky as its a busy road and when there are big cars or trucks parked on one side of the driveway exit, visibility is limited.

Constantly there are cars that park with their backside or front right on the edge of the driveway curb - there is a white line on either side of the driveway that gets ignored.

When cars are parked like this I have to cross both sides of traffic as I cannot do a sharp 90 degree turn making exiting dangerous. I have talked to the police and council and they don't do much - The police will only ring the car owner if it's fully blocking the driveway and the council state they will send someone out to check which never happens.

I got some paper stickers stating "I park like a (Profanity)" to stick on these cars but don't want to get in trouble with the police — Is this the best solution? I have stopped people sometimes when I see it happen and either I get ignored or people move on - there is lots of visiting traffic full of young assholes (male and female) that just ignore me as parking is a premium especially in summer. Note: I am not a huge bloke that can intimidate people :)

Edit: thank you all — I have taken photos of cars with their asses and front hanging right at the edge and ignoring the white lines and also the visibility issues getting out into the main road. I will also see if anyone else in the unit block is willing to sign an application for the driveway more visibility marked and mirror on pole to see over parked cars when exiting. There is a neighbour whose kid is doing chemo so i will try to see if they have issues getting out as that will be much more powerful to include than some old bloke . This always gets worse in summer as Unit is near a beach and big 4WD with wheels attached to the back love making exiting hard!

    snap send solve.

    The end.

    • Ask the OC to increase the width of the driveway, so its a double driveway. It'll be much easier for ingress and egress.

Get a trailer and park it next to the driveway. If it is narrower than a car and much shorter that should solve your manoeuvring and visibility challenges.

    • +3

      a registered and immovable trailer
      .

    • +1

      Actually a really good idea.

  • +4

LoL @ those stickers… Link?? I want to get some…

And for the record I am a huge bloke, but I still like petty, passive aggressive stickers. (I made my own laminated cards and had fake parking tickets to stick under arsehole parker's wipers)

Either way, just keep annoying the council and the police and they will end up doing something about it. Squeaky wheels always end up getting greased…

My sympathies, its extremely annoying when cars are parked to your driveway exit and when it doesn't have a wide opening to the main road.

Had the same issue recently. Called council, they sent a ranger and issued a fine.

Keywords that work magically with any administration: Unsafe, danger, accident, injury

    • Best with photo/s too.

  • +5

If it is parked illegally wouldn't the council rejoice in handing out fines?

    • There's probably easier ways to rack up 10x the fines it takes to fine one car in a random neighbourhood.

    • it'll get stolen…

        source another one.

        • +1

          100@$1.50=$150. Cheaper than a trailer.

  • I think your issue lies with the council.
Get them there and you'd be amazed how quickly the issue is resolved.

Steal a couple of no stopping signs from somewhere else - make sure you get a matching pair of arrows on them. Install them either side of the driveway.

** I do not condone theft.

Back in the 80s a mate painted a zebra crossing on the road outside his place to get to the beach… He got in all sorts of shit LOL! reckon the stop sign would be similar :D

      • At least it’s easyish to remove a couple of signs.

      • I'd like to hear more about this story!

        • His theory was if someone hit his dog etc while crossing the road they'd be liable… Apparently the insurance on the dog part was the clincher for him.

In our whole town (only round 1000 people when I grew up) there was not one set of traffic lights nor one actual marked zebra crossing.. Some streets had no street lights. Infact there were no street lights on the road into town (one road in, same road out) until several people were killed on the road. :(

    • Machiavelli would be proud.

Perhaps this is a bit drastic, but if you are renting, maybe consider moving into a better located property when your lease ends.

  • If there are other affected residents get together with them and ask them to sign a petition which you can hand to the council.

They pay more attention to signatures on a petition.

Council have the power to erect signage, such as - 'resident parking only' etc., and enforce it by sending rangers around on a regular basis.

    • Or just sign on behalf of your neighbours. ,

  • I have talked to the police and council and they don't do much

    Gee, what a shock.

  • Can you reverse into your driveway? Might make it easier to exit

  • Are there parking spaces marked out? You could ask Council to do this, though you may lose the number of spaces as they have to be a certain length, and usually where 3 people can fit, you'll only get 2 spaces, etc.

But as above, use the keywords

    Unsafe, danger, accident, injury

Focus on how visibility is poor and you cant see oncoming traffic.

And push for linemarking to be put in.

Hrmmmm… Last time I checked, I paid council rates, taxes and fuel excise, so, maybe I do own the road or at least the right to get in and out of my own property without arseholes blocking up my driveway… Incidentally, the driveway I also paid for and paid stamp duty on…

Think of it like this… Your driveway is your "credit report" and the offending car is "Woolworths Mobile". Now imagine the action of blocking all or partial access to your driveway as an "unwanted credit report inquiry…" and then someone saying to you… "check your shares portfolio and see if you own Equifax, and if you don't, pull your head in"…

Spot on. Vigilante justice is always the way to go.

        My mistake.

        • +1

Vigilante? He's not assaulting them. OP was simply suggesting to send them a heart felt summary of how considerate those drivers are being. This is freedom of speech, not Vigilantism.

OP has every right to be angry. No horse involved.

          Be happy, happy dude.

    NO!

The edges of the driveway have a rising ridge to meet flush with the gutter. It is illegal to park your vehicles anywhere beyond this point.

If any vehicle is breaching this rule, you contact the City Council Parking Ranger Dep, and have them attend the scene.

Alternatively, download the Snap Send Solve, parking infringement app, that allows you to take photo of offending vehicles, and have the Council deal with the situation…. simple

do a anonymous public service announcement warning the offenders of the spate of cars/trucks that have also done this having their tyres slashed. - needless to say you'd be horrified if that happened to other continued offenders.
    * note to any snowflakes…nowhere here is a recommendation for anything illegal or violent. your welcome

    • The only time i damaged a car is when some (profanity) blocked the driveway and i had to pick daughter up from hospital - I dont know if i would slash a tire though as it could be dangerous if they dont notice and im not big if i get caught by the owner and dont want to end up in a fight. Once the driveway was blocked overnight so a bunch of renter smashed the window and pushed the car into a bus stop which was fun to watch

      • +1

You don’t slash a tyre, you stab them. If you don’t slash properly it’s likely to explode in your face. Stabbing usually allows the air to escape a little more slowly.

If you want to let down tyres and good way is to find a small pebble and put it under the valve cap so it leaks slowly. Then they find out later when you aren’t around.

Depends on what sort of revenge you want though.

        • thank you for the tip about the pebble - This is something i would more likely do - shove a stick or pebble in the valve if its a repeat offender . A friend suggested superglue in the drivers seat lock or boot for maximum annoyance.

          • +2

            @sardines:

A friend suggested superglue in the drivers seat lock or boot for maximum annoyance.

That won’t do anything, both are probably operated by remote. You could go Vaseline/grease on/under the door handles.

            • +1

@Euphemistic: super glue WILL seal the doors….or so I'm told. nudge nudge. wink wink.

              • +1

@ozboygsl: It’ll stop you putting a key into the lock - a lock that is essentially a switch to trigger the central locking in cars built since central locking was put into base models.

Super glue in the handles would possibly work.
