Public Hospital Wisdom Tooth Surgery Melbourne - How Long Is Waiting Time?

Hi. I have a bottom wisdom tooth which hasn’t grown out properly so will need to have surgery for them to take it out.

Has anyone managed to get it done in a public hospital? And how long was the waiting time?

Thank you

If the GP, who has a degree in medicine, told you to see a dentist, who has a degree in teeth or something, you should go see a dentist. The collective interbargainweb has not these degrees.

    • Stop it 🤣🤣🤣

    • Yes i will go to a dentist to get the referral . But i went to see a GP many years ago and they did send a referral to the hospital for a different dental issue . So im wondering whats changed

Because a Dentist isn’t a “doctor” and vice versa.

  • Yes, I got mine done publicly. However, it was done as part of a much larger surgery.

Wait time was approx. 5 months. This includes covid elective surgery cancellation period that occurred in early 2020.

    • Thats not too long . Did you get a referral from a dentist or GP ?

      • Neither, I was referred by the private oral and maxillofacial surgeon I was seeing at the time for a completely different issue.

        • Ok Thank you

  • sydney has a dental hospital, free for health care card holders. I had minor surgery there

  • Are you from one of the groups listed here?

Your GP has the option to refer you into the public or private system. Often unless you ask, for non urgent, not particularly specialised stuff they’ll default refer you to someone privately, unless you identify that you can’t afford private or particularly want to go public. Many GPs struggle navigating the public system, ie knowing how to submit a referral, what services are available where and who is eligible (unfortunately this is sometimes a deliberate strategy by public health services to reduce referral volumes) so they often just refer privately.

If you want to find out look up your local public service here
https://www.dhsv.org.au/our-services/find-dental-clinics/cli… Then call and ask if and how your GP can refer you.

    • I do have a health care card which on the card says its valid till october 2021 . But if they check on the system it has been cancelled now cause my husband has gone back to work after losing his job . So i dont know if its enough to show them the card or they actually check their system

      • They will check as they have to enter the card number into the system.

Your only option is to get it done by a dentist. Pay the money and don't try and sponge off the system.

        • Actually health records are not integrated with Centrelink records. OP should be eligible.

      • I’d definitely give it a go, using this card, if you are worried about cost and don’t mind waiting. Maybe check via the link above how to get a referral to your local service. Be mindful that you may have to wait a long time though.

  • As per https://vahi.vic.gov.au/dental-care/waiting-time-dental-serv…, general dental care which includes extractions has a current wait time of over 20 months
