Is There a "Reasonable" Expiry Date for Contact Lens Cleaning Solution ?

Purchased this 3 pack contact lens cleaner online, from Chemist Warehouse for in store pickup, a few weeks ago:

Now, just realized the expiry date is Oct 2021, and (what looks like) the date of manufacture on each bottle is Oct 2019.

That gives 3-4 months to use 3 bottles, which in our household, with slow usage, means only 1 or 2 bottles will be used by then.
I know in hindsight, that I should have checked the expiry date written on the bottom of the box during pick up, so lesson learnt for next time.

My question is, is there a "reasonable" expiry period for items like contact lens cleaning solution?
Maybe number of months per pack, or something like that? Or is the onus all on the buyer to check, and the shop can sell with any expiry date, as long as it has 1+ day of expiry?

  • Onus on buyer, return on the spot if you see they've given you one that's about to expire. Heck I'm sure they'd be okay for a return if still on original packaging on the same day.

Hard to manage inventory expiration dates if they're long shelf items.

I mean, if you value $6-12 like a true OzBargainer over your eyesight, I’d say go for it.

Though personally, I would write it off as a learning experience.

  • The only thing I ever check for expiration when buying something is milk..

    • Even then, what's a few days?

      • Dairy Expiration dates I don’t mess around with

I used to have the same problem. Also, according to the warning, even though a bottle might not be due to expire for a year, once it has been opened, it should be discarded after 90 days:

    Warnings
For External Use Only. Precautions: Always discard solution from lens case after each use. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Use before expiration date marked on the carton and bottle. DISCARD REMAINING SOLUTION WITHING 90 DAYS AFTER OPENING

If you don't use contacts often, might be better to use daily disposables. No need for solutions! Maybe give the extra bottle to a friend now (so they have 4 months to use) rather than let it go to waste?

  • I've used solution years past use by without issue. But do so at your own risk obviously
