So What Are You Eating during This Lockdown Fun Time (Sydney Citizens Only)

I need food ideas plus I am curious to know what you guys in Sydney are eating during this lockdown fun time (Sydney edition only).

I so far have gone through a delivery of domino's and might get thai menulog tomorrow.

On my schedule is also frozen chips, mi goreng, other noodles, maybe nachos, possibly bacon, sausages, meat pies and might give the frozen butter chicken meals a go again we shall see.

Yeah very not healthy I don't think I need to worry about the virus and more about scurvy.

So what are you eating during this lockdown sydney edition.

Melburnians and others can post but I am more interested to see what us Sydneysiders are going through right now.

Edit: I don't feel so good

Tax for all the stupid things I have done.

      • -2

Is this fun for you? Sad…

        • +3

come on cheer up we still above ground that has got to count for something put some pitbull on he will get you happy

so what did you eat last night lets start with that :)

          • -1

@AlienC: I dont eat shit like that. Maybe once a week i have a pizza or something but not everyday. Imo the worst out of the lot of em are the frozen ready too cook meals. They are terrible

            • +1

@PAOK11: that is good so what do you normally eat

              eating healthy is good man

I am trying to change my ways but it is so hard fighting the cheap alternatives and convenient options

              what can you cook

              • @AlienC: Bro I literally cook two things one night I have salmon with veggies the next night I eat steak with veggies. I rotate back and forth and alternate the veggies maybe have some pasta or rice with it but very rarely coz I cbf

                • @PAOK11: Nice I do you pan fry all of the above or oven roast the veggies.

I plan to learn how to do proper roast veggies this year or next then maybe do a test run of which gravy goes best with it.

I have done eggplant and tofu in a fry pan with a bit of oil then I cook some rice in the rice cooker.

Delicious meal only needs a tiny bit of salt to taste.

I might do some of that this lockdown period if I can run to the shops and get through my current frozen meals and resist delivery.

                  • +1

@AlienC: Roast carrots are the bomb, just toss them in olive oil and then put them in a pan in the oven for 20-30 mins

                    • @Gronk: what is the trick for getting good roast pumpkin from an oven

                      • @AlienC: Sorry mate, can't help you with that one - don't like pumpkin :D

                        • @Gronk: no problem that is alright

                          what stuff do you like

                          • @AlienC: In terms of roasted veggies?

Roasted head of cauliflower is another good one, spread on a little bit of garlic and parmesan and roast until it looks ready - aside from that most of the veg I eat are steamed.

For me the key to staying on the healthy bandwagon is to switch up the flavours constantly, so curries, stir frys, mexican, bbq / smoked meats all make regular appearances.

    Sydney Citizens Only

I know it’s all about Sydney - but I didn’t realise it had become it’s own Nation. Can I claim citizenship if I spent the first 30years of my life there?

    • +1

I'm not in Sydney but still have had to lockdown, I guess I'll starve if I'm not allowed to know what you all are going to eat.

    • +4

I didn’t realise it had become it’s own Nation

Thats a bit rich from a Queenslander

      • +1

Haha - so true I thought this too as I wrote it. I still don’t identify as a ‘Queenslander’ though, just live here. A resident more than a citizen.

        • Yes have a brother on Gold Coast and he says the same. But hey lets hope your neighbours can take a little ribbing fun.

    • Don't worry with the way the government here (I'm in Sydney despite my profile) carried on they've spread the Delta variant to other states. This thread could eventually be for "Australian citizens only" thanks to their idiotic government and lack of early action.

    • Depends on where you live now.

If you know where to get the best chips and gravy I could give you a free pass.

  • +11

it's 2 weeks, not 6 months in antarctica.

    • +1

And supermarkets and most take away places will still be open so unless you eat out every night nothing will change.

  • +3

Make roast pork belly in air fryer.

  • +3

You do realise it's not just Sydney in lockdown? You don't even live in Sydney; you live in the Blue Mountains (which along with Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Central Coast are also in lockdown).

    • Yes it's by adding those other great regions, then Sydney be called "Great…er" 😀

      • +1

I know you're joking, but for the uninformed: greater Sydney means not just Sydney the city Sydney; it's all the suburbs like Hornsby, Rouse Hill, Waterfall, Campbelltown, etc.

        • +1

Of course we are playing with words. Lets hope the ozbargain fun police understand that.

          Maybe greater to say …..

          Greater Greater Sydney

          😀

        • Wait so is Blue Mountains part of Greater Sydney? or Greater Greater Sydney? or is it just West of Greater of Sydney?

          Really want to know.

          • @AlienC: All depends on where the media reporter is located. Some dont even realise there are houses west of Parramatta, hence your confusion. Dont rely on the media for facts.

            • @RockyRaccoon: True that. Rely on no one and trust no one.

Good words and philosophy to live by.

    • You don't even live in Sydney; you live in the Blue Mountains (which along with Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Central Coast are also in lockdown).

:( I don't live in Sydney.. it is official now I didn't know before this comment welp at least one good thing came from this thread lol

this is quite relieving to learn about

  • Couldn't believe it when I saw that there was panic buying of bacon yesterday. Bacon??

  • Not sure if serious post or not. But I made a quick chana masala using canned tomatoes and chickpeas. Done in about 15 mins.

Otherwise if even lazier I go for frozen chinese dumplings, ready-made ravioli, chicken kiev, etc.

  • some frozen favourites, birdseye fish fingers, rosemaru and sea salt deli chips, adding a cut up fresh tomato or cucumber, lean cuisine satay chicken, tuna mornay, coles frozen snack apple pies.

  • Maybe you should heat up those frozen chips and butter chicken OP before you eat them.

I will with the fire from this thread.

5 Years on - AlienC post

What cures are there for Prostate Cancer…….

    • I already got the 5 times to the toilet in the middle of the night symptom but that is from all the soft drinks and water I consume like a thirsty camel madman.

      • Its not the peeing that you should be worried about….

        • Tell me more.

      • +1

so thats where all the toilet paper went

        • I should not say but sometimes I don't use tp to dry my pp.. it is gross I know the more you know :)

Trying to understand why your diet needs to be different because there’s a lockdown?

  • +1

Slow roasted aliens with high ascorbic acid content..

  • So What Are You Eating during This Lockdown Fun Time

    Cook your own food. :)

  • I think you need to add lots and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables to that diet. It appears to be extremely unhealthy. You don’t want to have a heart attack before the 2 weeks is over.

  • Herbert Adam's pies 1/2 price at Woolies. Got a whole bunch of em…

  • Same same - whole food plant based for me and primarily for rest of family.

  • If you are planning to get Mi Goreng (Indomie), dont forget this below, you might as well have a chance to win $4k game package. Comp closing today 27 June at 11 pm hahaha

If you are not losing any income during this lockdown, support your local small businesses by getting takeaway a little bit more, rather than just freezer food.

Sure don’t do it daily, but if you’re someone who would usually go out on a weekend and spend ~$100 on food/drink per night, allocate that to your locals instead.

In Melb I lost some of my fave takeaway places and I wish I had visited them more.

    • Sorry to hear that.

Yeah I think my locals are still doing ok and will be open throughout this lockdown.

And I still have to leave home for essential work so I might visit some in the next two weeks.

I just thought with the lockdown people might be spending more time learning how to cook or just cook in general since there is only so much you can do while cooped up at home thus the creation of the thread.

Honestly just bored and haven't made a thread in a while so bored.

  • Cook your own roast. Tastes so much better…

    • Taking tips and tricks for doing carrots, pumpkins and anything else you think goes good in a roast.

Like what exact method do you use or what oil is best when do you season the veggies how much heat and time and oil do you use.. and is it possible to get good flavours without using any meat juices or stocks.

Are the stores all cleared out, is that why your menu is full of junk? Just because it's lockdown doesn't mean you shouldn't take care of yourself. Go out once a week and try to get fresh veggies and fruit for the week, don't eat all that junk.

Also, you know other states went through lockdown… so limiting the commenting here only from Sydneysiders is kind of silly since Sydney hasn't really endured anything terrible up to this point. Maybe some Melburnians out there would be able to suggest some good things. Kind of silly to try and limit this to Sydneysiders only.

  • You might have to go back to a few lockdowns in the next months/years. You better get used to that and find a way to have a more balanced diet, otherwise you might not be around for the next lockdown. (coming from a Melbournian with vast experience in lockdowns).

    • What recipes do you recommend or what are your tips and tricks for healthy eating?

Do you eat vegetables raw or do stir fry or air fry or oven fry or something else?

      • Buy the Ottolenghi SIMPLE or another similar book and prepare food for 2-3 days and keep portions in the fridge, or freezer if you will take longer to eat. I usually cook for dinner, and I make a bit more for lunch next day (or the second next if I don't want to repeat). Most recipes in this book take around 25-35 minutes.

I am not picky at all and eat almost everything that is not moving; depending on the recipe, I use the air fryer, the oven, or stir fry… I cook stir fried vegetables a few times a week (using olive oil), but I like raw tomato, carrots, leaves in my salad… I use the air fryer more for meat, mainly chicken and fish, sometimes for vegetables as well. I try to limit red meat to 2x/week, but I am not obsessive. :)

I use sweetener instead of sugar, but I do eat a piece of dark chocolate every day.

Once a week I order pizza, burger, or something like that.

I eat a lot of fruits during the day. Together with nuts (varied), they are my main snacks.

I've never had cholesterol issues before the lockdown, last year. Then, I started cooking a lot more, and use butter to prepare Hello Fresh recipes and things like that. I also prefer full cream milk. I was also not exercising as I used to before the first lockdown. So, for the first time my cholesterol was mildly elevated, and I had to make some changes.

Butter was replaced by olive oil, which had always been my first option before the Hello Fresh boxes anyway. I use butter when I make a risotto or other few recipes that need butter to be better. Let's say I use butter once or twice a month.

Full cream milk was replaced by the "lite" version.

I've always selected lean meat, but when I cook something like chicken thigh the air fryer is amazing. I see all the fat that I am not eating.

The lockdowns have completely destroyed my exercise routine… It is very demotivating, particularly in Melbourne's Winter. It has been very difficult for me as going to the gym is the only physical activity that I enjoy. I don't play any sports.
Lockdowns suspended the gym a few times here in Melbourne; currently, there are still limitations, and sometimes queue to get into the gym, which makes it very challenging.

I am a bit sick of Melbourne's lockdown to be honest. I will be moving to NSW in a few weeks, and I hope I won't find lockdown there. Can you (NSW residents) please go back on track? :)

        • Thanks for the excellent words I'll keep everything you said in mind over the next couple weeks and near future as for the New South Wales residents comment we will try our best to get back on track but no promises unfortunately.

  • when at the store linger in the fruit and vege dept. Grab something, grapes or tomatoes or kiwifruit or avocado or something, take it home and wash it, and have a fruit bowl or similar to let it fully ripen. Look for loose fluffy mandarins. Easy to peel, and very sweet

    • -1

      Good idea.

I need to really increase my fruit and veg intake.

I think I can do grapes they are easy and simple to clean, eat and maintain.

Just chuck it in the fridge right?

      • there are red and white, get both

        • sounds like a plan
