Best HDMI Docking with 2 Outputs at Different Resolution?

Hi everyone,

I'm running a home setup for WFH with 2 external screens. Currently one is connected to the HDMI port and one is connected to the USB-C. I would like to get a docking station to claim the USB-C port back but am kinda lost at what to get. Many docking stations I found online have conflicting reviews about whether they work for my purpose or not.

Information about the setup:

Laptop: HP Zbook Power G7
Screen 1: Dell S2721DS @ 2560x1440
Screen 2: BenQ GW2480 @ 1920x1080

Thanks a lot!

  • The dock usually connects via the USB-C anyway? Or does your monitor not deliver power over the USB-C?

    • But a dock usually comes with an USB-C port. Connecting the screen directly to the USB-C port on my laptop means I can’t use it for anything else (charging phone/headphone etc)

Not a tech expert, but I’ve been using this to connect two monitors and other peripherals to my work laptop. It might work for you?

Note that it connects via regular USB and doesn’t come with a USB-C port, but that leaves your laptop’s USB-C port free. It also doesn’t charge your laptop (so is more of a port replicator rather than docking station).

    • Thank you! Quick question, do you use different screens at different resolutions or are they the same model?

I use an old Samsung monitor and a newer Dell monitor both connected via HDMI, and both at 1920x1080 normally. When I switch one to a lower resolution, they still seem to work fine. Apparently the port replicator supports one 4K screen but it’s not something I’ve tried.

Looking at the table here, you might need to connect your Dell monitor via the DisplayPort to have them both work at your resolutions.
