Do you think this is a good deal? HP Pavilion X360 14" FHD Core i5 2-in-1 $898 @ JB Hi-Fi

I am looking for a laptop to finish high school and start university, and have been looking at some 2 in 1s, such as the HP Pavilion x360 14", which can be gotten for $868 with cashback:

I have been looking at 2 in 1s for the possibility of taking handwritten notes using the stylus as part of my study, and also quite like the HP Envy x360 (I have also looked at the M1 macbook airs). I have the money in hand for the HP Pavilion, but don't have enough for the M1 Macbook air or HP envy, and was just wondering if the HP pavilion is a good enough value proposition for the price point, or whether I should wait and save up for a more expensive laptop, like the M1 macbook or the HP envy.

I have about $900 saved up as of now

If only there was a method on this site to submit deals for others to vote on

    • Yeah it would be useful

    Positives
    * fingerprint sensor
    * includes active pen (or perhaps not? best to check with JB Hifi otherwise you're going to have to pay extra for the active pen)
    * cool looking aesthetics, although keep in mind aesthetics has nothing to do with actual performance

    Negatives

    • dim 250 nit displays with 45% ntsc
    • hum-ho 7 hour battery life
    • wobbly trackpad

I would say it's "good enough" to get you through uni. The display is a dealbreaker though and the battery life is also below average, and generally speaking for a device that you're going to use outdoors a lot you'll want to make sure the display is viewable in sunlit areas and the battery will at least last you a whole day (which this laptop does not).

    • mmm yeah those were the two main factors which were making me lean towards the HP Envy

Pen input is great for taking notes of things that are difficult to type out — equations for mathematics, Structural formulas for science etc. but it's unlikely that you will use the pen to write out actual words for an extended period of time.

If you don't need handwriting input, or if it's not a huge consideration at all, your choices are much simpler.

The M1 Macbook would be my first recommendation for a normal laptop (assuming you know your way around MacOS), but otherwise hard to go pass a sturdy business grade laptop such as a Lenovo Thinkpad series (not IdeaPad), Dell Latitude / XPS or even a Microsoft Surface Laptop.

        • Yeah the problem is the budget though. I can't afford the top of the line XPS or the better surface laptops

  • no. put it all in sportsbet

  • I ended up getting a HP Envy x360 13" 4300u model:

      Good choice

      • Yeah I thought it was quite a good deal. A ryzen 3 4300u should do all I need for school, and I have a desktop at home if need be
