Avoid $9 Credit Card Fee When Booking with Virgin Australia

Moved to Forum: Original Link

TLDR; call Virgin on 13 6789 after booking your flights, and tell them you couldn't use the Poli payment option because you're using a Mac. They will then refund the $9 credit card fee.

Details:

Click the "Poli" payment option when checking out, and you will get this notice:

Important Information:

Unfortunately Apple Mac & Unix/Linux users are currently unable to use Poli Internet Payments, until a new version of Poli is made available in December.

In the meantime to avoid a credit card fee please follow these instructions:

  1. Complete your booking by clicking the Credit Card payment option above.
  2. Once your booking is confirmed, please call our Guest Call Centre and advise the operator that you were unable to use Poli and that you require a credit card fee refund.
  3. The Guest Call Centre contact numbers can be found at the bottom of your confirmation email.

Note: Please have you reservation number handy.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

I assume December refers to last year, but this still applies, as it doesn't appear they have fixed the problem.

Call 13 6789 to get your $9 refunded.

  • Thanks for the information. However it would be a "hack" and not really a bargain. Moving it to the forums.

    • "hack" ??? more like an exploitation of the software.

    Thanks OP. An excellent tip.

Here's another for flyers that I use on JETSTAR. Instead of using the credit card payment option, I use the direct debit one (there's no surcharge on that*). That gives me officially two days to complete the booking and the seats are held meanwhile. Jetstar told me on the phone that the computer actually holds the seats a few days longer (at least as long as you are more than 14 days prior to departure) - they can even tell you the date. Meanwhile you can hunt around for cheaper fares and then get 10% off the lowest pricematch if you can find one.

If you don't pay for the booking it just expires on the computer system (and strangely no one can cancel or amend it meanwhile).

I am telling you this in particular because I once booked three people on Jetstar and within a few minutes found a MUCH MUCH lower price on offer and they effectively said "TOUGH" … its too late once you have paid.

    or use http://www.zuji.com.au/

No credit card or booking fee. Have used it on many Virgin flights without paying CC surcharge.

    • Can't select baggage @zuji.
Is it $12 for 23kgs after you book and modify your booking via virgin?

      • You will get an itinerary from Virgin after you make the booking, which you can then then add baggage via Virgin's site manage your booking tab. It was $12 to add 23kg baggage when I made a booking few months ago. I am not sure if the rate has changed since then. HTH.
