this can't be good for me…

    • +1

      See Nutricional Info Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indomie_Mi_goreng

It could be worse, I guess.

    • +1

Just don't live on a diet of them and you'll be fine.

      • some people eat this every morning for breakfast

        ==

it's a good product to buy in large quantities if we need to prepare for the 2012 fears..

        • Yeah it's not a very healthy breakfast. :P

Considering it has near to no energy, very low fibre content and a high fat content.

      • Same with everything I guess: don't live on a sugar diet, alcohol diet, steak diet, etc…

    • Now I just hope someone finally gets around to making a movie like 'Super Size Me' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390521/), but on the awesomeness that is eating at least 2 packets of Mie Goreng in one serving :) (aka the Jumbo packs!)

    • There's 8 grams of protein per serve; that's not to be scoffed at.
The MSG /preservatives is the thing to avoid. You could ditch that sachet, & flavour it yourself.

  • don't eat the oil packet..and it would reduce the fat content..
also you see how it is a solid when u open it..

    that is not very healthy..

unfortunately the oil packet is also what makes it smell and taste really nice…

but if u eat this noodle with the oil packet daily, u will put on weight and maybe clog your arteries faster..

there is something wrong with the nutrition guide
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indomie_Mi_goreng

it shows the nutrition content per 100g is less than the one serving which is 85grams…

how many packets of noodle in the box sold at asian grocery stores?
    which works out cheaper?

I think one box cost $10?

I think the cost is pretty close to iga?
plus iga is not as easy to access unlike woolworths

Anyways this noodle is so famous
it probably accounts for Indonesia's main source of income

      • +3

the oil packet is solid fat when open ..
and saturated fat in the nutrition information

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_oil

        • +14

@ jv & ryang, just so you don't embarrass yourselves in future on this topic: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-…

"Unsaturated fats are called good fats because they can improve blood cholesterol levels, ease inflammation, stabilize heart rhythms, and play a number of other beneficial roles. Unsaturated fats are predominantly found in foods from plants, such as vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. They are liquids at room temperature."

        • -8

@Stewballs, I don't see how they're embarassing themselves. Rather it is you.

Your quote clearly says that "unsaturated fats are called good fats" and "They are liquids at room temperature". Sure, that's correct, but migoreng has palm oil, which is, according to wiki, is one "of the few highly saturated vegetable fats".

Plus, the fat that comes with the migoreng is solid at room temperature - obviously not an unsaturated fat.

        • +5

@warghh, I've copy/pasted that little WTF moment here to obviate embarrassment reducing stealth edits:

I don't think you realise what you've just said mate, you've just talked yourself around in a circle…rethink that nonsense & get back to us eh! It looks like you might be eligible for membership to the facepalm club as well! ;)

        • +7

warghh, just in case you're still missing the point; unsaturated fats are (in general) good for you. Saturated fats are (again, in general) bad for you. As you said, the oil that comes with migoreng is obviously not unsaturated, i.e. it is saturated fat or bad fat. So yes, solid oil is bad, and liquid oil is good. ryang didn't seem to understand this and you obviously haven't either.

    • I thought it's 30 in a box. I haven't searched actively but a couple of stores I came across had them at 12 and 12.50 a box. Indo Mie has a competitor. I got a 30 box of Super Mi, also Indonesian, for $8 recently but this IGA deal is very good.

    • it shows the nutrition content per 100g is less than the one serving which is 85grams…

From Indomie Mi Goreng 85g NET weight packet:
      Nutrition Information
      Serving per package: 1
Serving size: approximately 175g (when prepared according to directions)

The nutrition information is measured on 175g, the weight of the noodle after it is cooked and absorbed additional water. Then the per 100g information is calculated by dividing by 1.75.

  • 36 packs in a box i think, i buy them from Chinatown, although at 25c its way cheaper than Coles or Woolies, a positive for me

    • -2

but there is not many iga stores unlike woolworths or coles

it is easy just to drop by asian stores and get a few boxes

plus iga ones don't come in a box..
so 36 packs in a bag is pretty big to carry

      • +2

How can you tell where to get these without knowing in advanced.

My local 'asian' supermarket doesn't have them, and I'm always a little confused when I'm in there.

  • This is cheaper than CostCo, which sells 36 of them for $13.

    • +3

i think asians stores sell them for $10 a box

      • Is there a way to find out which ones sell it, and where they are?

        • most of them sell it

just ask them..or bring a packet and show them..

          well u live in sydney..
find out where asian locations near you..or any asian groceries?

the most obvious asian location was on sbs recently

        • @tyler.durden

Cabramatta? West of Sydney? I'm not really sure, because I'm from Springvale, Melbourne. :/

        • maybe you could tell us where u live first =)
if it's in sydney, you can find them @ kingsford, maroubra, chinatown (thai kee), chatswood - even at coles, campsie (maybe other people can help and put up more locations)

        • Plus Bankstown & Cabramatta (and surrounds eg Fairfield) out west.

Better than all the beers you consume.

I have almost finished my last huge buy-up of these things. They are good with some microwaved frozen peas and corn mixed in. I eat 3 packs at a time, even the oil satchels… hasn't hurt me yetytttttttt
    ttttttttttiii lllllllllllll
    [has heart attack whilst typing]

    • +7

      hasn't hurt me yetytttttttt

You must be looking pretty young with all those preservatives you're consuming…

  • oh man this cant end well

  • -1

Mmmm… crude petroleum noodles garnished with liquefied asphalt and sprinkled with singed sawdust chips.

I used to eat a packet of these a day in high school. Haven't had one in about a year, I think this might just be the occasion to relapse into my Mie Goreng addiction.

    • i thought Amar89 was funny even if you didn't. he speaks the truth.

Bring onnnnn the nutrition and health fanatics!

A few health tips here and there are much appreciated, but when someone truly thinks an ozbargainer factors health over the psychological pleasures of impulse buying, then they've gone too far :P

And yeah, as a side note, you can just go to any decent asian store and buy a box of these and stock up for years. It's a great 'fall back' food to have somewhere for those extra lazy weeks you just weren't bothered to go grocery shopping/cbf cooking.

    • I'm fairly regimented in my health & nutrition, but Indomie is one of my weaknesses. I buy them as a one-off treat when they're on special for the 5/6 pack, coz if I stock them in the house that's all I would eat! ;)

However, I offset this occasional boost in saturated fat intake by increasing my HDL intake - this is of course a great excuse to eat two eggs per pack of noodles instead of one! Everybody wins! :p

      • Stewballs, you seem fairly knowledgeable in the food nutrition area. To save me copying and pasting 'HDL intake' into Google, could you explain this in layman/idiot terms? Is it really a good excuse to eat two eggs, because at moment the softly poached egg with Mee Goreng is my favourite! If I’ve got a semi legitimate reason to have two eggs with it I'll be in pig's paradise!

        • +1

HDL = High Density Lipoprotein. Short story: transport mechanism in the blood for good cholesterol. If you have more available blood borne transport for the good than the bad, then that's a really good thing coz it can actively remove bad cholesterol deposits from arteries & shuffle it off for metabolisation or excretion! :)

For many years eggs got a bad rap as being high in 'cholesterol'. As it turns out the HDLs in eggs are actually good for you, and reasonably high consumption can actually be therapeutic!

I remember reading a study that showed that eating from 12-16 whole eggs per week will actively lower the levels of the LDLs (Low Density Lipoproteins - bad cholesterol) in your blood.

Great news for me coz I really like eggs, and Indomie without at least one egg on top is meh; so two eggs is twice as good therapeutically speaking IMHO! :D

        • Thanks StewBalls. I'd just gotten good at poaching 1 egg, but over cooked 2 last night for my supper Mee Goreng snack. Have to re-adjust the cooking formula… but it's for my health damnit!

  • I just checked my cupboard and confirmed there's 30 packets per box. I paid $10 so that's 30 cents per 85g pack.

First time I've seen an Aussie supermarket undercut Asian grocery stores. Let the price war begin…

  • +7

    Back to Uni Special?

  • i think im the only one who doesnt actually like this stuff!

  • +3

Great deal, except IGA close from my place is a piece of crap hardly keep anything on shelves.

  • My tongue gets a little swollen when I eat this. It doesn't happen with any other instant noodle. =/

    • +8

Don't eat them then, you could have an allergy to something in them…swollen tongue is often a symptom of anaphylaxis…which is potentially life threatening.

Talk to your doctor dude, it's worth checking out your allergies.

  • +3

Asian Groceries in Cabramatta sell them in box of 40 for $8.50 only, just have to shop around a little cus they all have difference prices. Mi goreng usually comes in box of 30 or 40. I used to live on them. I often replace the oil satchel with olive oil & fried onion;)

  • What about IGA express stores?

  • Asian Groceries in Cabramatta sell them in box of 40 for $8.50

Wow, that works out to be about 21 cents per pack. I guess I've been getting ripped off this whole time. I wonder if any Asian groceries in Melbourne sell it for that price.

    • Chinatown, Box Hill, Glen, Clayton, Springvale. West-side has Sunshine, St Albans, Footscray. etc.

    • in Melbourne i've only ever seen the 40 box for $10-$12. (Hawthorn mostly, but i've looked in box hill).

(it probably does get as low as $8.50 somewhere tho.

  • makes u think how much they actually buy it for.. lol

  • -2

Asian groceries and the other aussie supermarket Indomie's is different, one for local market (Indonesia) and another for Export quality.

Asian groceries Indomie written in Indonesian and while Woolies, IGA and Coles is written in English. That is why Asian groceries can sell it cheaper than aussie supermarket, why? cause Asian groceries bought it from gray importer (purchased from local with cheap price and send it here) which IMHO is not allowed!

    • they taste nicer… hehehehe…

      more preservative…

      • yummmmoooooooo wkwkwkwkw…. mie goreng with fried egg aaaahhh cant beat the taste

  • +1

    Finally, I can eat again

  • +1

Ive eaten these for a decade. I ate them before they were trendy.

    • "Mi goreng, taste so good, is so bad."

Had these back in mid 90s, oh the memories.

    • Someone who works for a friend of mine have been eating this for lunch and dinner for the past 20 years (maybe more, he has been working for my friend for 20 years). Firstly my friend thought that he's eating that because he wants to save money, but as it turns out he just simply don't eat anything else. My friend offered him rice, meatballs, fish, soups, curry, etc, he wouldn't budge. Didn't eat anything else for that 20 years. This guys is probably 40-50 years old, so it's probably that he may have eaten this for the earlier part of his life too.

      • wow, that is so incredibly unhealthy.

      • All comes done to health vs. personal pleasures.

Even with smokers, if you've been chain smoking 30 years and have an absolutely ff'ed up system (but not bedridden yet), and tomorrow you die, at least you died happy. :D

I bet your friend totally loves Mie Goreng, hehe.

  • You can't go wrong with indomie
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG2dLLIZK3Y

    • now i know how black girls get their booty… mi goreng noodle addiction :D

  • Went down to IGA North Sydney and they're showing 85c!!!

  • Iga neutral bay and mosman showing full price too :-(

  • At which IGA? IGA don't typically have nation-wide specials, or even state-wide specials — they vary a lot from location to location. None of the stores in my local area have this special.

  • They are 55c at Coles Ropes Crossing NSW!
Not sure if other Coles are the same price

  • +1

i have been checking couple suburb none of them got this promotion, remmeber iga is independent store, so the promotion can be for local only, next time you should put on the title, which iga are you referring to
