Do I need a WiFi Mesh or WiFi Extender or Other?

Hi All,

I live in a 2-level apartment and have just set up a home office in my study located downstairs.

My router is located in the living room upstairs. Diagram here: http://imgur.com/a/qZcR1RU

I am with TPG FTTB. My download speeds for upstairs (~47Mbps) are significantly higher than downstairs (~2Mbps).

What would be the cheapest solution to bring the speeds in my Study to match upstairs?

Let me know if any more info is required. Thank you!

Just get a mesh wifi router.

    • Completely agree, I have have used both and as soon as I got my Eero system it was 100x better.

don't extenders generally half the speed?

    • They may halve the wifi throughput, but that should still be sufficient to get the full 50Mbps Internet speed.

    • Depends on what speed you need to WFH. TPG FTTB says 100Mbps and speed test might be 90Mbps but real world I suspect it is more like 50Mbps. I have it and it depends on how good your work VPN etc is at getting you the data.

  • I had issues with my wi-fi reaching the back bedroom in my house. In the far corner of that room, download speeds were 2-4 Mbps, whereas at the door to the room was about 50 Mbps, and next to the router and around the front of the house was 90+ Mbps. Installed a TP-Link mesh system and I get 90+ Mbps housewide, including in that back corner. I am very impressed with it. The only downside - and this is no fault of the system itself - is that I had to get a few powerpoints installed so I could neatly tuck the units away in cupboards.

Thanks everyone. Looks like wifi mesh is the way to go.
What would be the most economical option, given thats its not a particularly big apartment?

I was in the exact situation as you when we started WFH last year. 2 storey apt, router located on 2nd floor. Bought the TP Link Deco M5 mesh wifi and never looked back. Don't do extenders and they are a pain in the ass to set up and maintain, requires restarting almost everyday. With the M5, I have no dead zone. Everywhere I go even on the balcony, my wifi is there.

    • Do you think a 2 pack will suffice or will i need 3?

      • I think you might need 3.

Edit: but don't quote me on that. Hehe I just blindly bought 3 pack.

  • Go mesh and get the fastest you can afford. AX is better than AC.

  • If you really want to OzBargain it.

Just run a CAT cable from your router to near the stairs / bedroom and plug in a second router (pick up cheap) as access point. Probably cost you a lot less.

For 10m I can't see what they signal is so bad. Maybe it is the standard TPG modem. I got FTTB and the modem is pretty bad.

UPDATE: Got the TP Link Deco M5, price matched at Bunnings for $179. Works as intended and actually tripled my download speeds. Also tax deductable. 10/10 would buy again.
