ING Direct website issues

So this has been bugging me for over a week now…problems with loading ING Direct Internet banking. It works intermittently (and will work one minute not the next). This was happening on 3 different computers over 2 Internet connections from 2 different providers…I called ING Direct and they told me that they are "aware of problems and are working to fix it".
I understand that problems happen….but this is getting ridiculous…
The thing is, I've not had a problem except recently and ING Direct have been really good up until now, but I'm not sure whether to walk :(

What does everybody else think?

  • From an OzBargain perspective, ING direct provides the best bargain when it comes to everyday accounts. A would have thought a week of intermittent Internet banking is probably not enough to walk. Maybe next time you call them ask for a credit? No harm trying.

  • With all the news major banks cutting jobs, I am not surprised if any of them are cutting jobs in IT, which has long been labelled as liability by the banks. That might have effects on how quickly they can resolve IT related issues. They might be busy putting out fire on some other issues, and "intermittent website issue" might not be their top priority…

Anyway. I have no idea what their issues are. Hopefully it would fix itself soon.

  • it's not just you. i've noticed that since about 2 weeks ago that i cannot access https://www.ingdirect.com.au directly for internet banking without first accessing http://www.ingdirect.com.au.

it's like they've got a trigger in their firewall that only opens port 443 for a period of time if you first access port 80.

    telnet www.ingdirect.com.au 443
    Trying 203.92.27.99…
    <times out>

    telnet www.ingdirect.com.au 80
    Trying 203.92.27.99…
    Connected to www.ingdirect.com.au.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    ^]quit
    telnet> quit
    Connection closed.

    • I noticed the same thing - sometimes (but not always) when you try and go to https://ingdirect.com.au/client/index.aspx it won't work when http://ingdirect.com.au will.

But not always….I guess this is a good "work-around" but still not perfect as http://ingdirect.com.au does not always work.

    • Interesting. Just tested and it's indeed the case. Like some door knocking mechanism where you must go to their regular website first before you can go to their Internet banking site.

If it's IP-by-IP basis I can see how it would stuff up on transparent proxies that have multiple IP addresses.
