Mobile Phone Outright to Scan NSW Government QR Code

Hi all, I'm looking at buying a cheap mobile phone one that I can use to scan the NSW QR code

The phone I presently have scans in at some venues but not in most others. When I look at NSW Gov site it says you need Android 9 or higher, I think mine is Android 10. The phone I currently use is a Telstra ZTE Blade A3 2019T it does everything I need besides the NSW QR scan. I mainly use my Surface Pro Tablet for anything besides basic phone functions eg calling, texts and a few apps

The specs for the QR scan for NSW Gov would be great also.

Thanks all in advance.

  • Which Mobile Provider will you be using it with?

    • Does the APP need connectivity outside home, or can function in offline /aeroplane mode?

      • It needs connectivity (I already tried) but you can hook up the free wifi at the venue you are visiting and that will work and as an added bonus it won't submit your IEMI information to govcorp if the phone doesn't have a SIM installed, at least that's what I read, not sure if true or not.

        • boost is the providor
and i have used the free wifi at the 2 venues where i can scan in with the nsw services app at those venues
the phone doesnt scan in at other venues or supermarkets

@seagull: Just launch the Service NSW app manually and select "COVID Safe Check-in". Too easy
            The rest is the same

            • @HeWhoKnows: Op said: The phone I presently have scans in at some venues but not in most others.

If it is the camera app, how come it works sometimes? and not fail all the time?

Have you tried using a QR code app rather than the phone's camera app?

  • you want a phone ONLY to scan QR codes?

  • +6

most people just install the Services NSW app and scan the QR code through the APP

As a bonus you no longer need to carry your drivers licence as you can get a digital one via the same app. I haven't carried a wallet at all for over a year, just my phone.

Just wanna hope you don't get pulled in a dead zone. No Internet access means you don't have your license.

I also think it's a major flaw with the services app and Covid check-in.

Not everyone has a data connection and/or credit on their phones.

        • my gut feeling this might be the case
since the first lockdown when they brought in the services nsw sign in
at my local i could never sign in because of the poor wifi/internet eg i would go out the front i would have to log back into the wifi when i come back in, also every time you enter the venue you would have to log back into the wifi

the venues where i can sign in the wifi is so much better (you log into the wifi once you never have to anything else upon entry to the venue you have wifi)

the other strange thing is the phones camera is 8mp but i take an old samsung tablet with a camera with 8mp it will sign in

    • With some (Chinese) phones the camera app wont launch the Service NSW app for security reasons so you need to launch it manually and select "COVID Safe Check-in".
      Too easy
      The rest is the same

I have heard that not all phones are compatible with the Service NSW App. When you look at the Service NSW site for requirements:-
Ensure you have the latest operating system:

    Android: Android 6 ("Marshmallow")
    Apple: iOS 10.

The above phone 'meets' these specs.
I would expect any current model from Samsung would be fine such as the A21S?

      • I admit, I find it works quicker and better, using the Service NSW App.

My phone is made Vietnam, and designed by a South Korean company. :)

I think the problems with old phones will the camera resolution and its light sensitivity.

    • Nope
      Thats not the problem

Some venues that laminate the code then place them behind glass can cause reflection issues.

    • +1

Does the NSW one not allow you to just manually enter the code? (QLD has a 6-digit code you can enter into the app instead of scanning the QR code)

    • Nope
      Thats not the problem
They are laminated in most places

      • +1

        Laminated and behind glass

        • So what?
          Thats not Ops problem
          I have already resolved it

    is this a troll post?

  • Some phone camera apps don't act on the instructions given by QR codes to launch the Service NSW app
    Mainly Chinese brands
    Maybe for security reasons

But after all, scanning the QR code just prompts you to open the Service NSW app

However you can do this manually…

    Open the Service NSW app
    Select "COVID Safe Check-in"
The camera launches in the app
    The rest is the same……….
You can scan the QR code to register the venue details

  • The Service NSW app works with Wifi as well

  • Are u sure that on the occasions the app doesnt read the qr code that the qr code is def one for services nsw and not a different one? My ph's app doesnt always read the qr codes either. I use the app to scan but apparently u can just use your camera which will open app also. Maybe use camera instead of app.

  • Govt should give us monetary subsidy for scanning their QR code in this pandemic. They have to share the expenses as well for their contact tracing.

ive just been to the telstra shop they tried the camera and the nsw services app none worked after making sure i had data etc

    • +2

Are you sure? Apparently @Amayzingone has "… already resolved it" /s

    • Did they have a solution?

      • nope

    • just for clarification when i mean i tried the camera, telstra shop employee downloaded the QR reader app it didn't work.

Typically most modern phones will scan the QR code.

You may need to download the QR reader app.
