A Good Color Printer Recommendation

Hi.. I am after a good color printer (+ scanner) for home use. I have used inkjet printer in the past and maintaining the cartridges (from ink not drying out) is a pain when the use is limited. Therefore, I would probably go for a laser printer which is low maintenance in that context though I am open to your views. I don't have the exact budget in mind but but prefer something in ~$300 range (or lower) which is good value for money.

I have a Brother MFC-L3750CDW laser colour printer that can print on both sides and has a document feeder tray. The only limitation is that it does not scan both sides when using the feeder tray. That said, you can manually scan both sides and still achieve the same result. Luckily, I don't do as much scanning, so doesn't really bother me. Retails for $397 at Officeworks. Overall, it is a good colour laser printer at that price point.

    • You're right. Below its price ($397 on OW), I didn't find any printer with ADF from a decent brand which offers color printing and scanning. It's a good pick.

I recommended this to a few people and they all seem happy.

    Or price match at Officeworks?

Officeworks is already cheaper than Amazon, so no price match! 😊

Weird, when I put that link up it said Amazon was $378? (or I'm going senile ….)
In that case get the OW one. :)

    • Thanks, ended up ordering it on Officeworks for $397. Out of stock on Amazon. I was after a color printer with scanner so this model ticks the boxes. Do you know if the price typically drops much lower if it's on sale or something?

      • It was a bit higher about 6 months or so back. :)

Wow. Almost $500 for all the toner cartridges - how many pages would you expect these to do?

    • They normally ship with starter cartridges, so not many! But they might ship with 'normal'l cartridges as they only print 1300 pages! You can get high yield ones that print 2300 pages.

But GASP 4 cartridges @ $165 each….. It costs more than the printer!

      • cartridges … costs more than the printer!

        Par for the course.

2500 for black and 1300 for colour (ISO/IEC 19798), according to Brother's website.

I also found toner cartridges for as low as ~$115 (each), without looking too hard.

    • Or look up how to reset the toner counter when it gives you the toner empty warning. :)

3770CDW is the one to get - as this one does the duplex scanning on both sides. I believe it's exclusive to Officeworks - but if you don't need that feature you could opt for the 3750CDW which is a bit cheaper. Then it gets even cheaper if you don't need colour.

    • It's way more expensive than this one.. I wonder how they both differ in terms of features except two-sided scanning. It's much premium for that one feature I guess.

      • Same printer except 3770 is dual side scanning due to the multiple scanning laser

Cool.. Ended up ordering 3750CDW on Officeworks for $397. I felt it's a better value for money.
