New Car Warranty and My Rights Vs Manufacturer's T&C's

I have a 2019 Kia Cerato Sport, and want to maintain the 7 years warranty on it.

For the first two services, I took it to Kia's network; however, the next one coming up is a major service and is coming in around $600.

Obviously I'm not trying to pay that much, and was quoted $200 from an authorised independent mechanic who will do a log-book service.

Just reading under Kia's new car warranty T&C's states that "In order to receive warranty service under this warranty you must take your KIA Vehicle, along with the Service
and Warranty Manual, to an authorised KIA Dealer in Australia during the normal service hours of that dealer."

However, the ACCC says that "Provided you service the vehicle in accordance with any such requirements, the warranty will remain valid. If the manufacturer's warranty states that the vehicle can only be serviced by an authorised dealer, this may raise concerns under the Competition and Consumer Act)"

So, which is right?

In order to receive warranty service under this warranty you must take your KIA Vehicle, along with the Service
and Warranty Manual, to an authorised KIA Dealer in Australia during the normal service hours of that dealer.

This is if you need something fixed under warranty.

From a mechanic's POV, surely a $200 service just sounds like a "service special" - oil & filter and fluid top-ups?

For a $600 capped price service, I'd personally be making sure OP was comparing like-for-like.

      • +5

Correct. I just mean op is talking about two different things.

The first one is about how to get something fixed under warranty, the second is about servicing to maintain your warranty validity.

Only issue comes with out-of-warranty repairs. A dealership who have been servicing for the full 7 years, may have more push with Kia if a warranty repair needs to be done at the 8-10yr mark.

Besides that, as I said above, just make sure you're comparing like for like, and that your $200 quote has the same inclusions (and isn't Kmart…).

Otherwise there's no reason why you can't service with someone authorised who'll use genuine parts and fluids (inc the filters)

    1 Year or 15,000 km $266.00
    2 Years or 30,000 km $460.00
    3 Years or 45,000 km $329.00

    4 Years or 60,000 km $613.00
Your Authorised Kia dealer will perform these tasks at the time of this service:
Replace Engine Oil with 5W/30 A5
Replace Oil Filter with Genuine Filter
Replace Sump Plug Washer with Genuine Washer
    Add Genuine Fuel Additive
    Add Genuine Oil System Cleaner
Replace Brake Fluid with Genuine Brake fluid
Replace Cabin Pollen Filter with Genuine Filter
Replace Fuel Tank Air Filter with Genuine Filter
Top up Windscreen Washer fluid with Genuine Windscreen Washer Fluid
    Inspect Engine Air Filter
    Inspect Cooling System
    Inspect Drive Belts
Inspect Vacuum and Crankcase Ventilation Hoses
    Inspect Fuel Lines and Hoses
    Inspect Exhaust System
    Visually Inspect Battery Condition

    Inspect Power Steering System
    Inspect Tyres (Pressure & Tread)
    Inspect Driveshaft Boots
    Inspect Front & Rear Suspension

Inspect Vapour Hose, Fuel and Filler Cap
    Inspect Valve Clearance (Audible Only)
Reset Service Indicator on Dash Display
Check for Outstanding Service Campaigns and Recalls
Connect Kia Diagnostic System (KDS) and check for DTC`s
    Kia Roadside Assistance Activation
    Perform Quality Control Road Test
Carry out Kia Vehicle Inspection Checklist

This is the first service that hits the $600 mark.. Has your 2yo car really done 60,000km?!

I'm surprised the following is included
      - Add Genuine Fuel Additive
      - Add Genuine Oil System Cleaner

Haven't seen the above in other makes service requirements.

What is 'Genuine' Windscreen Washer Fluid? lol

I'm surprised they Replace Fuel Tank Air Filter in 60k.

Unlikely the independent will charge only $200 for a service + cabin/fuel filter change & brake fluid flush.

The independent most likely only quoted for a oil & filter change given the car is only 2 years old.

      • Oil system cleaner - C0A39-APK00 - list $10.00 OIL SYSTEM CLEANER
        Fuel Additive - KMF300 - list $8.59 INJECTOR CLEANER - 250ML

Replace Sump Plug Washer with Genuine Washer

      That's it, I'm sold… where do I book in ??

      • What if it already is a Genuine Washer?

        • They had me at "genuine"…

I wouldn't trust those aftermarket sump plug washers… They are probably made in China and as we all know, cHiNa pLuG wAsHeRz bAd!!2!1!!1

    • To be fair, with something like a Toyota, $200 could be reasonable for that service list

KIA's oil filer is about $25, the pollen filter is ~$45. The fuel tank air filter is above $50 and requires the back seat out. Parts are likely $200, $200 for removing cabin trim to screw with the gas tank, $100 in labour and $100 to pay for KIA's self insurance for their burning car problem the next year of road side assistance.

Your $200 logbook service is definitely not equivalent to Kia's major service.

    $600 isn't actually that bad.

As long as you service the vehicle in line with the logbook it doesn't matter where you go, the car manufacturers tried to force people to come back to them but luckily the lobbyists didn't win out against the little guy.
Some manufacturers (like mitsubishi) have a 5+5 year warranty if you keep servicing with them but i don't think the 7 year Kia warranty is worded like this so you're free to go wherever you want.

In order to receive warranty service under this warranty you must take your KIA Vehicle, along with the Service and Warranty Manual, to an authorised KIA Dealer in Australia during the normal service hours of that dealer.

As above, this means you can’t get a third party to do repairs for work covered by warranty.

You can still get it log book serviced elsewhere but it a widget breaks, you need to go to Kia to get a replacement widget under warranty. A third party could still replace the widget, but you’d have to pay for it and it would not be considered warranty work.

    Genuine Windscreen Washer Fluid

    Lol

    • Add Genuine Fuel Additive

Not sure if Kia serious, or just taking the piss…

        or just taking the piss…

        Or adding it?

        • Sounds like a business opportunity!

I priced up that $600 service 50% is parts if you buy

this is a large % "Replace Fuel Tank Air Filter with Genuine Filter"
Its a fuel filter not air filter, $150 part alone and a crap job to DIY, get fuel everywhere.

    • +1

      fuel filter not air filter

No, it's an "air" filter, and no fuel is disturbed replacing it. It's something to do with fuel vent and charcoal canister.

Remember too that Kia service comes with complimentary roadside assist so if you break the chain you may be up for that as well (if you did decide it is important to have).

I just bite the bullet and pay dealer prices during the warranty period. That helped me get a just-out-of-warranty issue fixed on my Kia as they could see I had full dealer servicing. I could have possibly got there under consumer guarantee argument but I didn't need to go there.

  • What about Genuine Blinker Fluid?

  • As others have said, pay the $600. You will be thankful when it's year 8 and something major craps out. Dealers are usually more pushy wiht Australian reps to get stuff covered outside of warranty if the car has been serviced there.

I had over $2,500 worth of mechanical work covered outside of warranty by my dealer because the car was always serviced on time at their shop.

  • Normally I'm all for saving every buck possible, but in this case I go with the majority. There is just no way a service for 1/3rd the price is going to be up to the standard or quality of the Kia service. Owning a car isn't cheap (heck, it's why I don't have one…) but sometimes you have to invest in your investment :)

I compared the Kia capped services against my own private mechanic when my sportage was under warranty. A large markup was in the diesel oil, so I elected to provide my own which my kia dealer was happy to use. Like the poster said above, each service gets you automatically enrolled in Kia Roadside Assist, which has say a $70 to $90 value, so really I wasn't saving that much by taking it to a private mechanic. Maybe like $50 to $100 per service, which really wasn't worth it, particularly as Kia is pretty good about their warranty claims over the warranty period.

Like the posters said above, make sure your private mechanic is giving you an exact quote for the same log book service.

    • New-ish Kia owner. I also feel that Kia capped price servicing is more expensive than Toyota. Apart from the roadside assist I think the Map and other software update can only be done with Kia servicing as well.

      • Good point re maps, but in the multiple years I took my sportage in for service, I only received one map update from memory. I am not sure if things have improved re GPS updates.

  • Personnelly I would just continue with the Dealer service as if anything does come up under warranty their is less of a chance of a push back if issues. Ie they did the service and can't say the other mechanic didn't do something. $600 isn't really that much for the type of service required.

christ on a bike if you're dithering over a $600 service then maybe a brand as prestigious as KIa is not for you
